One Million Moms Don't Like Urban Outfitters' Fucking Xmas Catalog

One Million Moms is once again attacking Urban Outfitters because its holiday catalog includes items that have naughty words on them. Among those products is a "Merry Christmas, Bitches" coffee mug and a "Let's Fucking Reminisce" scrapbook.
“This really isn’t anything new for them,” said Monica Cole, director of the American Family Association’s One Million Moms division. “Their catalog has offensive profanities on products and little knickknacks, T-shirts -- you name it. And so many teenagers shop there.” Cole said the company “consistently” uses profane language in its merchandise and has been on AFA’s watch list for at least three years. AFA contacted Urban Outfitters several months ago for inappropriate pictures in its catalog and last year for graphic content on its apparel, she said. “They use it consistently,” she said. “We’re asking them to clean up their website and catalog. They are offensive.”
The Family Research Council is backing the AFA's campaign, saying, "It is especially ironic that at a time of year when reverence for the birth of God's Son should animate renewed humility and civility that a major retailer would, instead, cheapen itself and its customers through the use of barnyard epithets."

One Million Moms Vs Urban Outfitters

They never run out of ways to be outraaaaaged.
Dear Joe, The clothing chain Urban Outfitters is promoting a provocative new line of t-shirts with slogans such as "I Vote For Vodka" and "USA Drinking Team" which promote underage drinking. On their website under women's graphics, other versions modeled by young women who appear to be teenagers wear tees that read "I Drink You're Cute" in blurred letters and "Spooning Can Lead to Forking." Sadly, what's apparently meant to be a joke isn't far from the truth. Alcohol use is associated with increased rates of sexual activity for teens which can lead to contraction of STDs or teen pregnancy.

These products are offensive and inappropriate for a store whose primary customer is teens and tweens. The majority of the company's customers are between the ages of 18 and 24, but the second largest demographic are kids under 18. It is unacceptable for a company to market alcohol related material to teens because kids should not be wearing these disturbing t-shirts that glorify drinking and sexual activity.
Please act now and call their 22 year-old manager!

On Sale At Urban Outfitters

Salon weighs in:
What’s your pleasure, young person who lives in a Mormon Williamsburg of the mind? Mitt, dolled up like a member of KISS? A subtle picture of an oven mitt, and the word ROMNEY? A Hammer-pantsed “2 Legit 2 Mitt” Romney — which, if you think about it for half a second, doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. And though I don’t believe in victim blaming, I will warn that if you decide to go out walking down the street in a distressed, elephant-logoed “Mitt Is the Shit” shirt, you will have no one to blame but yourself for the inevitable butt-trouncing you receive.

Urban Outfitters Pulls Marriage T-Shirts

New York Magazine reports that Urban Outfitters suddenly pulled their line of t-shirts that support marriage equality, possibly because the company's owner is an anti-gay right-wing tool who gives generously to GOP candidates and causes.
A buyer cited the reason as "too much bad press" to Littman [the shirt's creator], though the designer couldn't find more than one blog entry that dissed the shirt. (Funny how a youth-targeted company blamed the Internet.) But we had to wonder if there was more to it than just bad press. After all, Urban has carried more sensational items than this in the past. In a 2006 interview, the Boston Globe asked Richard Hayne, the CEO of Urban Outfitters, if he felt regrets or second thoughts about potentially offensive products, and he said "very, very, very rarely." So is the veto of Littman's shirt just a case of good ol' discrimination? Consider this: Hayne is a notably right-wing Republican who supports senators who vote for legislation against gay marriage.
Over at Good As You, Jeremy Hooper has posted Richard Hayne's donation record.Next time you feel like getting all hipsterish with one of Urban Outfitter's ironically downmarket t-shirts, remember two words: Rick Santorum. Last month, claims were made that Hayne also donated to Yes On 8, but the makers of these claims say his donation has somehow been scrubbed from the list of donors. The call to boycott Urban Outfitters and other Hayne-owned companies seems to have since died down.
