Franklin Graham Has The Kenya Sadz

"While visiting Kenya Barack Obama publicly lectured Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta about gay rights yesterday. I didn’t know that we were sending our president halfway around the world to promote the gay & lesbian agenda! Samaritan's Purse has an office in Kenya and has worked there many years, and I can tell you that the churches in Kenya know what the Bible says about homosexuality—it is a sin. Sin should not be embraced, but recognized truthfully for what it is and for its serious consequences. God’s Word says, 'the wages of sin is death.' Thankfully though, sin does have a remedy—forgiveness is available through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. As a world leader, the United States of America is now exporting the acceptance of immorality via our president. What will the cost of that be?" - Franklin Graham, posting to Facebook. Kinda sounds like a call for the gay death penalty, doesn't it?

KENYA: President Obama Defies Critics, Speaks Out Forcefully On LGBT Rights

ABC News reports:
President Obama publicly disagreed with his Kenyan counterpart over gay rights today as he urged African nations not to discriminate against individuals based on sexual orientation. The president made the remarks at a news conference he held with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who called gay rights in his country a "non-issue." Obama discussed the subject on his first full day in Kenya while drawing on his own background as an African-American in the U.S.

"If somebody is a law-abiding citizen who is going about their business and working in a job and obeying the traffic signs and doing all the other things that good citizens are supposed to do and not harming anybody, the idea that they are going to be treated differently or abused because of who they love is wrong," Obama said.

Shortly after, Kenyatta said while the U.S. and Kenya share many values, gay rights is an issue on which the two countries disagree. "There are some things that we must agree we don't share," he said. "Our culture, our societies don't accept [homosexuality]." Kenyatta added it was difficult to impose beliefs on the Kenyan people that they "do not accept." "This issue is not really an issue that is on the foremost mind of Kenyans and that is a fact," he said.
WATCH this clip. At the end the president of Kenya dismissed everything Obama said: "For Kenyans today the issue of gay rights is really a non-issue."

Obama Backs LGBT Rights In Africa

Via the Associated Press:
President Barack Obama voiced strong support for gay rights in Africa on Thursday as he began a trip to the continent, bucking calls from some African leaders to keep his views on such controversial issues to himself. Obama, who departed Washington late Thursday for a trip to Kenya and Ethiopia, had faced criticism from rights groups and growing calls to press the issue aggressively while in a region known for a bleak record on human rights. In an interview with the BBC, Obama said he had been "blunt" with African leaders about gay rights in the past and planned to make it part of his agenda for this trip, too. Asked about Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto, a critic of gay rights in the U.S., Obama said: "Yeah, well, I disagree with him on that, don't I?" "Everybody deserves fair treatment — equal treatment — in the eyes of the law and the state," Obama said. "And that includes gays, lesbians, transgender persons." A number of Kenyan politicians and religious leaders have warned Obama in outspoken terms that any overtures on gay rights would not be welcomed in Kenya, where gay sex is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
Yesterday Obama told the BBC, "I am not a fan of discrimination and bullying of anybody on the basis of race, on the basis of religion, on the basis of sexual orientation or gender."

KENYA: Nude Protest Of Obama Canceled

The Kenya Star reports:
A nude protest against homosexuality did not take place on Wednesday following a call from State House, its organiser has said. The protest has been postponed, Republican Liberty Party leader Vincent Kidala [PHOTO] said, adding he was forced to cancel it in a 2am phone call. "The caller said President Uhuru Kenyatta is not planning to discuss gay rights with US president Barack Obama and that he is against gay rights," he told the star on phone. Kidala claimed the national security committee also cautioned against the protest in another phone call. "The unidentified caller said protesting would be like pushing for a terror attack. He said they have terror alerts and would not want to take chances," he said. Kidala said the protesters will be on stand by in case Obama talks about gay rights during his three-day visit for the 6th Global Entrepreneurship Summit.
Organizers claim 3600 protesters had registered for the event. Obama arrives in Kenya tomorrow.

KENYA: Anti-Gay Group Calls For Thousands To Protest Naked Against Obama Because Homosexuality

African Spotlight reports:
Kenya’s Republican Liberty Party has notified the authorities of its intention to mobilise 5,000 men and women to protest naked against President Barack Obama’s “aggressive support for homosexuality”. The party said it has already notified the authorities for protest scheduled to hold on July 22 and 23, coinciding with the U.S. president’s visit to Kenya. Vincent Kidala, the party’s leader, wrote to the Police on Monday to notify the authorities of the planned protest march from Nairobi’s Freedom Corner to the streets of the capital. He said the protest would involve “totally naked men and women” to “demonstrate the difference between men and women. “The procession shall be carried out by approximately 5,000 totally naked men and women to protest the President Barack Obama’s open and aggressive support for Homosexuality. “The party’s main objective is for him to understand the difference between a man and a woman,” he said in the letter to the Police.
Local activists are calling bullshit:
Denis Nzioka, a LGBTI rights activist in Kenya, has described the protest as the ‘height of stupidity’. ‘This is a kneejerk reaction after only 25 showed up at their last homophobic rally,’ he told Gay Star News. ‘I’m trying to figure out how exactly they figure 5,000 people will show up with no clothes on to protest Obama and gay rights. ‘This time, not even 25 people will show up.’ He added: ‘They want to show to the people and to Obama the “differences” between men and women, that a penis enters a vagina. That’s how they think, and that’s how stupid and ridiculous and ignorant this is. The Republican Liberty Party just trying to stay relevant.’ Kenyan lawmakers have attempted to put a gag order on Obama in order to stop him from mentioning LGBTI rights while he is in the country later this month. However State House has ignored this call, allowing the US president to speak freely.

KENYA: Tabloid Outs Local Gays

From Kenya's Citizen Weekly:
When Kenya National Human Rights Commission and a section of non-governmental organisations came out guns blazing and demanded William Ruto apologises to the gay community for saying Kenya has no room for gays and lesbians, many were left wondering whether they were hearing right. Others wondered whether they were still in Kenya or in the Godless America or Europe. Addressing a press conference, KNHRC executive director Atsango Chesoni said Ruto’s remarks during a church service are homophobic and put the lives of gays and lesbians in the country in danger. [snip] Homosexuality and lesbianism are slowly taking root in Kenya. It was initially in boarding schools, prisons but now has found its way in churches and other institution including blue chip companies and even among sportsmen and women. Government institutions such as the judiciary, parliament, senate and counties have not been spared. Of late, there are thousands of homosexuals and lesbians. The list of gays has well known faces including two governors, two senators and a cabinet secretary. Two women MPs are lesbians and one principal secretary is said not to be straight. A well-known billionaire who owns a media house is also said to be a homosexual.
From Gay Star News:
Citizen Weekly has exposed 12 LGBTI activists and leaders. Several were previously in the closet. While some are known internationally as proud spokespeople for the community, others include a senator and a gospel singer. Few Kenyans are openly LGBTI as it is illegal to be gay. Activists fear the newspaper will incite mob violence, similar to when Ugandan activist David Kato was killed after being 'named and shamed' on the front page of a tabloid in 2010. While the frontpage headline reads: 'TOP GAYS, LESBIANS LIST IN KENYA OUT', the actual article as seen by GSN does not call for violence or murder like other past tabloid lists of this nature. It references how Kenya's high court has ordered the government to allow a gay rights group to register after they initially refused it on the basis of moral and religious grounds.
Homosexual acts in Kenya are punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

KENYA: "Stone The Gays" Bill Introduced

Kenyan legislators have introduced a bill that could result in death by stoning for those convicted of homosexuality. Via Pink News:
The bill’s author, Edward Onwong’a Nyakeriga, said: “The petition aims at providing a comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect the cherished culture of the people of Kenya, legal, religious and traditional family values against the attempts of sexual rights activists seeking to impose their values of sexual promiscuity on the people of Kenya. There is need to protect children and youth who are vulnerable to sexual abuse and deviation as a result of cultural changes, uncensored information technology, parentless child developmental settings and increasing attempts by homosexuals to raise children in homosexual relationships through adoption, foster care or otherwise.”
The bill also includes a life sentence for running a "homosexual brothel," which the above-linked article notes could be used to target anybody who lives with a gay person. According to Wikipedia, 83% of Kenyans identify as Christian. (Tipped by JMG reader Lulu)

OKLAHOMA: Christian Missionary Says Demon Made Him Molest African Orphans

From the New York Daily News:
An accused child molester from Oklahoma is claiming that a demon named Luke forced him to commit disturbing sexual acts against children. Matthew Lane Durham, 19, faces life in prison for allegedly raping and molesting up to 10 Kenyan orphans during a missionary trip to the Upendo Children's Home near Nairobi between April and June of this year. In oral and written statements, the Edmond teen allegedly confessed that he spanked, caressed, and engaged in sex acts with young girls and boys at the orphanage. He also wrote that he would force the children to watch while he touched himself. In chilling text messages between Durham and unnamed friends, obtained by KFOR, the teen reveals that he believes he’s a victim of demonic possession. “How can i not hate this thing inside of me? It takes me at night and i am powerless over what luke wants. Yes i named him i know how crazy that is. He whispers in my ear all day and hes so hard to resist” [sic] Durham wrote in text messages released by prosecutors. The teen claimed he tried to pray the demon away, but the spirit wouldn’t budge. “You honestly have no idea...i’ve prayed so much, but every night luke gets what luke wants,” [sic] Durham wrote.
An Oklahoma grand jury has indicted Durham on multiple felony charges including traveling to Kenya "for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with persons under 18 years of age." The charges were requested by the US embassy in Nairobi.

KENYA: Parliament Approves Polygamy

Kenya's Parliament has approval a bill that makes it legal for men for take multiple wives without getting the approval of their first wife. Female legislators are furious.
Female MPs in Kenya have stormed out of a late-night parliamentary session in a row over the legalisation of polygamy. The law is intended to bring civil law, where a man is only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners. But male MPs voted to amend the new marriage bill to allow men to take as many wives as they like without consulting existing spouses. Traditionally, first wives are supposed to give prior approval. Correspondents say about 30 of Kenya's 69 female MPs were in the 349-member chamber for the debate but were outnumbered by their male counterparts. The women walked out in disgust over the matter.
The bill must be signed by the president to become law.

KENYA: Pastors Burn HIV Medications After Declaring Patients Healed By Jesus

Pentecostal pastors in Kenya are charging HIV patients to burn their medications and then tell them they've been cured by the power of Jesus. Via the Washington Post:
The “cure” is not free, and some people say they shell out their life savings to receive a miracle blessing and quit taking the drugs. Margaret Lavonga attended a healing prayer service several years ago. She said she paid money for a prayer cure and nearly ended up dead after the pastor told her and others to stop taking their medicines. “We were very desperate after realizing we had been infected as young women,” she said. At the church, she was asked to pay the equivalent of $12 to be accepted for the healing ceremony and $24 at the end of the ceremony. The pastor then confiscated her drugs and those of four others and set them ablaze. The group was asked to undergo a test at a certain clinic in Nairobi, where they were all declared cured.
When the patients then get sick and die, the pastors say their faith wasn't strong enough.

KENYA: Police Extort Gay Men

According to a report issued by Identity Kenya, police there are using social media and hook-up sites to lure gay men from whom they then demand money. Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya and punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
Anthony Oluoch, the former Legal and Human Rights Officer based at the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (GALCK) told Identity Kenya that police blackmail and extortion is main crime report to the organisation by married men, accounting for over 30% of the cases. Oluoch said that most blackmailers are straight masquerading as gays or gay men. Police officers routinely use socially networking and dating sites, such as Gay Kenya, GayRomeo, Gaydar and ManJam where men use to arrange for dates.

Last month a Catholic priest was blackmailed via this method. After arranging to meet a man on a dating site, police burst into his hotel room and handcuffed both men, and to the priest to a police station. The priest, nicknamed as Jackob was asked KShs 850,000 (€8,014 $10,000) after giving the officers KShs 10,000 he was released. The man the priest arranged a date was apparently not arrested and disappeared, which led Jacob to suspect he was involved in the set up.
Victims say they have nowhere to turn. "Where can this be reported to when the officers from the police itself are engaging in such crimes?"

KENYA: Evangelical Leaders Tell Museum To Hide Bones Proving Human Evolution

The leaders of Kenya's evangelical movement are pressuring the national museum to remove a world-famous collection of bones which conclusively depict the evolution of apes to humans.
The collection includes the most complete skeleton yet found of Homo erectus, the 1.7 million-year-old Turkana Boy unearthed by Dr Leakey's team in 1984 at Nariokotome, near Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. The museum also holds bones from several specimens of Australopithecus anamensis, believed to be the first hominid to walk upright, four million years ago. Together the artefacts amount to the clearest record yet discovered of the origins of Homo sapiens.
Bishop Bonifes Adoyo, the head of Christ is the Answer Ministries: "The Christian community here is very uncomfortable that Leakey and his group want their theories presented as fact. Our doctrine is not that we evolved from apes, and we have grave concerns that the museum wants to enhance the prominence of something presented as fact which is just one theory."

Kenya's Prime Minister: I Was Misquoted, Gays Won't Be Arrested

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga now says he's been misquoted and that homosexuals will not be rounded up and arrested.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Thursday denied that he had ordered a nationwide crackdown on homosexuals but maintained that such unions were illegal. He argued that he was misquoted and that his statements were not meant to victimise anyone because: “I understand there are gay rights.” The Premier, who was speaking during the opening session of the review on Kenya’s progress two years after the National Dialogue and Reconciliation Accord was signed, also argued that he was only highlighting some of the half truths that were used during the referendum campaigns. “It was said that I ordered the arrest of gay people but nothing could be further from the truth. I did not say that. I was just explaining the propaganda used by people who were campaigning against the new constitution,” he argued.
Contradicting Odinga's claim of being misquoted is the video tape of his speech in which he clearly says: “We will not tolerate such behaviour in the country. The Constitution is very clear on this issue and men or women found engaging in homosexuality will not be spared. Any man found engaging in sexual activities with another man should be arrested. Even women found engaging in sexual activities will be arrested."

KENYA: Prime Minister Raila Odinga Calls For Jailing All Homosexuals

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has issued a call for his nation's homosexuals to be rounded up and jailed.
"Any man found engaging in sexual activities with another man should be arrested," Odinga said at a rally on Sunday, in the Nairobi slum of Kibera. "Even women found engaging in sexual activities will be arrested." Speaking to his home constituency, Odinga, also a member of parliament, argued that since August census results showed the national population was perfectly split between men and women, there was "no need" for homosexuality. "This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in this country. Men or women found engaging in those acts deserve to be arrested and will be arrested," Odinga said to cheers and laughter in the crowd.
Odinga took power in 2008 after a widely-disputed election that resulted in riots and the deaths of more than 1500 people. While rarely prosecuted (at the moment) sex between men is illegal in Kenya, with penalties ranging from 5-14 years in prison.
