Queer Nation Protests At Today Show

Yesterday several of you emailed me to wonder what they'd just seen over the shoulders of Today Show hosts Kathy Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. Queer Nation activist Duncan Osborne explains:
"We walked in from 49th and 6th because they had the small crowd on the little plaza and the 49th St. side of the plate glass windows was unobstructed. As we whipped open... the Boycott Homophobia banner and pulled out Gay-Bashing is not an Olympic Sport signs, the cops tried to grab us and hustle us across the street. We insisted on holding our ground (Get your hands off me! This is a public sidewalk!) and succeeded in staying there, evidently quite visible over Hoda's shoulder. After 5-10 minutes, they went to commercial, and got up from the anchor desk. Kathie Lee gave a smile and wave to the plaza crowd, then turned and looked at us, glared at me, and refused to return the smile and wave I was giving her. About 15 minutes later, they came back to the anchor desk for a segment. This time Kathie Lee looked at me, still stony, but felt forced to return my wave a little. Then they lowered the curtains around the whole studio. We packed up and left. A good time was had by all. All except for Kathie Lee, apparently."

Joe Biden: Gay Marriage Is Inevitable

During an appearance on the Today Show, this morning Vice President Joe Biden said that he agreed with the president's "evolving" position on gay marriage and that a "national consensus" on the issue is inevitable.
“I think the country’s evolving,” he said. “And I think you’re going to see, you know, the next effort is probably going to be to deal with so called DOMA [Defence of Marriage Act].” DOMA prohibits federal government from recognising gay marriage, meaning that even if states allow the practice, gay couples still cannot access federal benefits. Mr Biden added that attitudes had changed to openly gay soldiers and that consensus was beginning to turn in favour of gay marriage. He said that gay troops were now “widely accepted” and “the same thing is happening now in regard to the issue of marriage.”

Freep This Poll

UPDATE: The poll is open again.

Last week Good As You's Jeremy Hooper alerted GLAAD that a wedding contest planned for the Today Show would not allow entries from same-sex couples as the winners could not be legally married in New York, where the show is produced. Yesterday the show bowed to pressure from GLAAD and announced that the contest was now open to all couples, a decision that was met with many bigoted responses on the show's site. Today Yahoo News has posted the above poll. You know what to do.

Jenna Bush Joins Today Show Cast

Jenna Bush Hager, the "wild child" of the Dubya twins, will be joining the cast of the Today Show as a news correspondent.
The 27-year-old daughter of President George W. Bush will contribute stories about once a month, Today executive producer Jim Bell told The Associated Press. Hager, who is currently teaching in Baltimore, said she always wanted to write and teach, but never saw herself on TV. "It wasn't something I'd always dreamed to do," she said. "But I think one of the most important things in life is to be open-minded and to be open-minded for change." Hager has authored two books, both of which she promoted on Today. It was during Hager's segment to promote Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope, her book about an HIV-infected single mother, that Bell got the idea to hire her as a correspondent. Bell said she had a "natural presence" and comfort level on the air that the producers liked.
In addition to being an HIV activist, Jenna once offered the Bush family ranch to Ellen DeGeneres for her wedding to Portia de Rossi. The offer was made live on Ellen's show and was obviously a joke (and a jab at her dad, probably), but many took it as a sign of gay-friendliness.
