Focus On The Family: Abstinence Education Is Like Preventing Forest Fires

As a vengeful God continues to destroy their home state, Focus On The Family takes advantage of the inferno ravaging their neighbors to argue that Colorado's wildfires should teach us a lesson on the importance of abstinence-only education. SRSLY. From their blogger Chad Hills:

Today, in the state of Colorado, we are breathing smoke from a number of wildfires burning out of control. As of this morning, near Focus on the Family, it’s being reported that 15,000 acres have been consumed by fire and some 34,000 people evacuated by the Waldo Canyon fire. More to come, I’m sure. Wouldn’t we all agree that it’s better to prevent a forest fire, if and when possible, than treat the immense damage in its aftermath? These questions are similar to what the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA) is asking Congress and state legislatures about our nation’s approach toward pre-marital sex.

Certain questions arise: Why aren’t our schools, our states and our nation placing a clear and unquestionable priority on sexual risk avoidance (SRA)? Why are we intentionally spending billions of dollars handing kids matches (condoms), which result in careless (sexual) “fires” and treating victims who have been unnecessarily burned by sex (STDs, pregnancy)? Wouldn’t prevention be cheaper and healthier? “Safe” sex education – or promoting casual sex, while handing out condoms and birth control to kids – is analogous to passing out matches to kids in school, and telling them, “Be sure you play safely with these in the forest and, above all, have fun!”

We're still waiting to hear why, exactly, God decided to single out Colorado for this.

TENNESSEE: Anti-HIV Video Prompted Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Law

Tennessee's legislature approved a statewide abstinence-only sex education bill in May, drawing wide ridicule because public school students were banned from "gateway sexual activity" like holding hands. The law went into effect this week with the revelation that it was a public service announcement from an AIDS group that had prompted the bill.

A new law banning explicit sex education, spearheaded after an anti-AIDS group two years ago demonstrated oral sex on anatomical models in front of high schoolers, took effect in Tennessee this week. The law emerged after one Nashville parent in 2010 learned his 17-year-old daughter’s class had seen the performance of “safe” oral sex by the anti-AIDS group, Nashville CARES. “It took me by surprise,” Rodrick Glover told The Tennessean at the time. “My daughter thought it was pornography.” In response, the Tennessee gay news source Out and About targeted Glover as numbering among “fundamentalist bigots” who oppose the methods of Nashville CARES because the group “does not discriminate based on sexual orientation and, in fact, is considered to be gay-affirming.”

The new law also bans any mention of "devices specifically manufactured for sexual stimulation." I've written Nashville Cares to see if we can get a copy of that scandalous lesson in how to avoid HIV.

Utah House Bans Birth Control Education

The Utah House has passed a bill banning any mention of contraception in sex education classes. If a school does offer sex ed, it has to be abstinence only.

The state House passed HB 363 in a 45-28 vote following extensive debate. The bill -- which now goes on to the state Senate -- would lift the current requirement that all public schools must teach sex ed in grades 8 through 12. If the bill passes, districts would decide whether to offer sex ed classes that teach an abstinence-only curriculum, or not offer the course at all. Republican state Rep. Bill Wright sponsored the proposal. "We've been culturally watered down to think we have to teach about sex, about having sex and how to get away with it, which is intellectually dishonest," Wright said, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. "Why don't we just be honest with them upfront that sex outside marriage is devastating?"

Rep. Wright say his bill was prompted by Planned Parenthood materials which "promote promiscuity."

Both Of NYC's GOP House Reps Endorse Abstinence Only Sex Education

Although neither of them has any say in city government, both of NYC's GOP members of the U.S. House have come out against the city's recently approved sex ed curriculum.

Reps. Bob Turner (R-Queens, Brooklyn) and Michael Grimm (R-S.I., Brooklyn) joined NYC Parents' Choice Coalition in lobbying for a change. "Parents had no say in this mandate," Turner said. "The Archdiocese of New York, Orthodox Jewish groups, Muslims, many are saying this is a sensitive and delicate subject, and they want more say in what is taught." Turner said the coalition wanted school officials to offer a second, abstinence-based sex-ed curriculum. Parents and politicians will rally for change outside Public School 104 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, today. School officials announced in August that sex education would be required in all city middle and high schools.

These guys know abstinence education only leads to more pregnancies, more STDs, more AIDS.

Teabagger Rep. Randy Hultgren Attempts To Revive Abstinence Education Funding

Focus On The Family is thrilled to announce that freshman teabagger Rep. Randy Hultgren (R) has introduced a bill to revive the funding for abstinence education.

Valerie Huber, Executive Director of the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA) based in Washington, D.C., said in a press release, “Since President Obama chose to eliminate all funding for abstinence education, this bill is a welcome sign that sexual risk avoidance can once again be the primary prevention message that youth will receive in classrooms across America.” She continued, urging other Members of Congress to co-sponsor this bill, “NAEA applauds the leadership of Rep. Hultgren who has taken legislative action to support these positive trends in the healthy decisions teens are making … We encourage other Members of Congress to co-sponsor the Abstinence Education Reallocation Act of 2011 and urge the House to quickly approve the federal sex education policy change called for in this bill.”

Numerous studies have proven that abstinence education usually results in higher rates of STDs and teen pregnancy.

ADF Vs. ACLU On Internet Filters

The anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund has entered the long-running battle to get public school systems to stop blocking websites that are useful to LGBT students. According to an ADF letter sent to several school districts, administrators are within their legal rights to ignore ACLU demands to lift the bans. Via the Christianist news outlet, OneNewsNow:

The ACLU is presently suing several school districts about the issue. "School districts shouldn't be bullied into exposing students to sexually explicit materials," argues ADF attorney David Cortman, adding that the ACLU's "Don't Filter Me Initiative" would be better named the "Public School Porn Initiative." "That's because the ACLU is pushing its radical sexual agenda for children by intimidating school districts with a long string of scare tactics," he continues. "These are just disguised as a concern over censorship, but in truth these school districts have no obligation to cave to the ACLU's unwarranted demands."

Because GLSEN and P-FLAG are actually porn sites. Yup.

Bristol Palin Paid $262,000 For Work Against Teenage Pregnancy

Abstinence advocate and teen mother Bristol Palin was paid $262,000 for appearances made on behalf of a teen pregnancy prevention group.

Bristol Palin was 18 when she was appointed as a teen ambassador for the New York-based foundation in 2009, months after giving birth to son, Tripp. She and the 2-year-old boy's father, Levi Johnston, are no longer together. Palin family attorney John Tiemessen and foundation officials did not immediately return calls for comment Tuesday. Palin, who still works for the foundation, told The Associated Press last year that girls would think twice about having sex if they knew how tough it is to be a mother. She said she "wasn't prepared at all" for the dramatic changes in her life since becoming a mom. "I don't think anyone realizes how difficult it really is until you actually have a screaming baby in your arms and you're up all night," Palin said

NEW HAMPSHIRE: Federal Court Rules Students Must Hear Pledge Of Allegiance

A federal appeals court has ruled that a New Hampshire Patriot Act requiring the "voluntary" recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance does not force religion on students. The Freedom From Religion Foundation had argued that even a so-called voluntary recitation of the words "under God" violated the Constitution and made outcasts of students unwilling to participate.

The panel of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit on Friday rejected the claim that exposing children to group recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance violated their constitutional rights. The judges, a Clinton nominee, a George W. Bush nominee and an Obama nominee, agreed the pledge references religion, but they said its purpose is to encourage patriotism. The ruling affirms a 2009 ruling by U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe at the federal court in Concord. "In reciting the Pledge, students promise fidelity to our flag and our nation, not to any particular God, faith or church," wrote Chief Judge Sandra Lynch. "The New Hampshire School Patriot Act's primary effect is not the advancement of religion, but the advancement of patriotism through a pledge to the flag as a symbol of the nation."

Christianist website World Net Daily hailed the decision with this headline: "Court: Constitution 'does not require complete separation of church and state'." In 1954 the words "under God" were added to the Pledge after the Knights Of Columbus pressured members of Congress to make the change.

Bristol Palin Gets All Non-Abstinenty On Dancing With The Stars

With her parents looking on from the audience, last night abstinence queen Bristol Palin ripped her partner's shirt off during their rumba on Dancing With The Stars. Palin scored poorly last week, but don't expect her to be voted off tonight as the teabaggers have launched a massive voting campaign on Twitter.

I finally had to break down and watch Dancing With The Stars to see how Bristol Palin did. Not terrible, but certainly not very good. Sadly, I'm predicting Margaret Cho as the first to go. TMZ claimed earlier today that Sarah Palin was to be in the audience and in the event of a security breach, the safety of the elder Palin "has a higher priority than Bristol. " This clip may have a brief life on YouTube.

Bristol Sues Levi For Custody

Sarah Palin's whore daughter is suing her baby daddy for custody of their bastard son. And the Palins didn't want anybody to know about it.

A Dec. 23 order from Judge Kari C. Kristiansen denied Palin's motion to close the proceedings and opened the case file to public access, while an order issued the same day by Presiding Judge Sharon Gleason denied Palin's request to use John and Jane Doe in place of Johnston's and her own real names. On Nov. 4, Palin filed for sole custody of Tripp Johnston-Palin, the former couple's son, who celebrates his first birthday today. Kristiansen initially issued temporary orders limiting access to the case file and allowing the parties to file under pseudonyms. Johnston wasn't playing along, however. In an opposition to Palin's motion for a gag order, Johnston's attorney, Rex Butler, said: "Simply put, this matter is public in nature, the courts are not refuges for the scions of the elite to obtain private dispensation of their legal matters because the public at large has an interest in the proceedings."

There's another factor in the mix, of course: Palin's mother, former governor Sarah Palin, with whom Johnston has repeatedly locked horns in the press, and from whom he claims to fear retaliation. "I do not feel protected against Sarah Palin in a closed proceeding," Johnston said in an affidavit accompanying Butler's filings. "I hope that if it is open she will stay out of it. ... I think a public case might go a long way in reducing Sarah Palin's instinct to attack and allow the real parties in this litigation, Bristol and I, to work things out a lot more peacefully than we could if there is any more meddling from Sarah Palin."
