Brigham Young Boots Gay Greeting Cards

Brigham Young University has told Hallmark to get those gay greeting cards off of the racks.
Placed by Hallmark, the cards reading "Mr. and Mr." and "Mrs. and Mrs." were quickly removed when bookstore staff discovered them after photos surfaced online. The outside vendor stocked the shelves without realizing the school wouldn't want to sell the cards marketed to buyers celebrating unions between two brides and two grooms, BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said. Asked why they were removed, Jenkins referenced the BYU honor code. It states that while being attracted to people of the same gender doesn't violate the honor code, acting on those feelings is a violation. "Homosexual behavior includes not only sexual relations between members of the same sex, but all forms of physical intimacy that give expression to homosexual feelings," it states.

Hallmark Launches Cards For Gay Moms

Hallmark has launched two Mother's Day cards for kids with two moms.
“Moms are second to none,” one card reads. On the inside, it says, “How does anyone ever get by with just one?” Hallmark Cards Inc. spokeswoman Kristi Ernsting said the company is offering two cards with same-sex sentiments this year: “One card ‘for two moms’ and one card ‘for my partner.’” They follow Hallmark’s new same-sex Valentine’s Day cards introduced this year, which Ernsting said “were well received.” Industry trade group the Greeting Card Association said same-sex Mother’s Day cards are a sign of the times. “With last year's Supreme Court ruling bolstering gay marriage, more companies are offering same-sex wedding cards, and we're likely to see an increase in same-sex cards for Mother's Day and Father's Day going forward,” director of communications Kathy Krassner said.
You-know-who is going to be furious. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Mother's Day.

Carol Costello Vs Hallmark

"Oh Hallmark. You didn't. Oh, wait you did. Hallmark's 'Holiday Sweater' ornament is decorated with 'Don we now our FUN apparel' instead of "Don we now our GAY apparel."Why? Hallmark says: 'When the lyrics to 'Deck the Halls' were translated from Gaelic and published in English back in the 1800's, the word 'gay' meant festive or merry,' according to a statement released Wednesday. 'Today it has multiple meanings, which we thought could leave our intent open to misinterpretation.' Homophobic? I say, yes you are." - CNN anchor Carol Costello, writing on her Facebook page.

UPDATE: Hallmark has issued an apology.
"We've been surprised at the wide range of reactions expressed about the change of lyrics on this ornament, and we're sorry to have caused so much concern," the statement read. "We never intend to offend or make political statements with our products and in hindsight, we realize we shouldn't have changed the lyrics on the ornament." But Hallmark spokeswoman Linda Odell said the company has no plans to stop selling the ornament.

Hallmark Edits "Gay" Ornament

Hallmark doesn't want anybody to accidentally have a gay Christmas. Via Huffington Post:
One of Hallmark's 2013 Keepsake ornaments is intended as a colorful homage to "Deck the Halls," but the featured line contains a notable change in the traditional carol's lyrics. A spokeswoman for Hallmark said the line was intentionally changed to prevent misinterpretation by holiday shoppers. "When the lyrics to 'Deck the Halls' were translated from Gaelic and published in English back in the 1800s, the word 'gay' meant festive or merry," Kristi Ernsting told The Huffington Post in an email. "Today it has multiple meanings ... the trend of wearing festively decorated Christmas sweaters to parties is all about fun, and this ornament is intended to play into that, so the planning team decided to say what we meant: 'fun.'"

Teabaggers Furious At Hallmark Cards

Tea Party activists are calling for a boycott of Hallmark Cards because of the above graduation message. Hallmark is already apologizing.
In a Hallmark statement, the card giant says, “Humor is a funny thing. What makes one person chuckle can be puzzling, or even off-putting, to the next, and there can be a fine line between edgy and startling, between gently playful and boringly safe.” Hallmark then provide an apology to anyone who is offended by the Obama graduation card. “We know that some people have expressed concerns about one of our humor cards that references President Obama and tea parties. “That line of cards has successfully poked fun at both sides of the political debate for many years. It is never our intent to offend anyone. “We apologize if anyone was offended.”

From The Hallmark Boycott Petition

How about some commentary on the Hallmark boycott from the lovely folks at the American Family Association? Here's a sampling of what their members are telling Hallmark on their petition about the company's line of gay marriage greeting cards:

- "Gay marriage is wrong, against God's standards. You cannot mock God without feeling the consequences."
-"This is not in the Bible and it is against the things of God."
-"It's a sad day when the BEST greeting card company bows to this degenerate lifestyle!"
-"Please take heed to our plea...and let's stop the judgment of God on our nation."
-"I am very disappointed that you are supporting something that contradicts the natural design of families and our bodies."
-"You are causing far more destruction than you realize."
-"When I take my child into a greeting card store and there are homo cards on display there for my child to see is where I draw the line - that is shoving it in my face."
-"Hallmark is pandering because you probably have a lot of gay artist-poets and people in management who are DESPERATE to normalize their perversion."

All this over a boring three card line that show nothing more graphic than two cartoon tuxedos.

Christianists To Boycott Hallmark

The right-wing has come out swinging against Hallmark's line of gay marriage cards. Both the American Family Association and the Family Policy Network have issued protests, with the latter announcing a "full-scale boycott" of Hallmark.
A full-scale boycott against the world’s largest greeting card company will begin next week, prompted by the introduction of new products intended to congratulate recipients of so-called “gay wedding” and “civil union” contracts in states that recently began granting them to homosexual couples.

The pro-family campaign against Hallmark Cards, Inc. is being orchestrated by the nationally-organized Family Policy Network (FPN), which is based in Forest, Virginia. Several state-based pro-family groups are participating in the boycott, and their names will be featured on the boycott website when it is launched next week.

FPN Policy Analyst Alex Mason stated Friday that whenever evangelicals were informed of Hallmark’s pro-homosexual cards, interest was high in holding the card-maker accountable. He said, “Up to this point, Hallmark’s brand was pretty wholesome. If they don’t reconsider this endorsement of immorality, they’ll lose more customers than they stand to gain.” He added, “We hope our efforts to hold them accountable will help them see the light.”

An official announcement from Family Policy Network concerning BOYCOTTHALLMARK.COM will be distributed to national media outlets and the group’s supporters in all 50 states next week.
A full-scale boycott against an uninspired line of greeting cards that don't even use the WORD marriage. These people have empty, empty lives.

Congratulations On That Thing You Did

Hallmark has issued a series of rather bland same-sex marriage cards.
Most states don't recognize gay marriage — but now Hallmark does. The nation's largest greeting card company is rolling out same-sex wedding cards — featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers, with best wishes inside. "Two hearts. One promise," one says.

Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions. The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure.

"It's our goal to be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can," Hallmark spokeswoman Sarah Gronberg Kolell said. Hallmark's largest competitor, American Greetings Corp., has no plans to enter the market, saying its current offerings are general enough to speak to a lot of different relationships.
According to the linked story, some companies are holding back production until they see how Proposition 8 goes in California.
