Bob Mould Plays Letterman
Stereogum recaps:
Bob Mould performed on The Late Show With David Letterman last night in support of his latest album Beauty & Ruin, which came out last summer. He played two tracks from it — “Tomorrow Morning” and “Kid With A Crooked Face” — along with his backing band, and Letterman seemed pretty impressed. Jason Narducy, the bassist for the band, tweeted that “people in the studio audience confirmed that dust fell from the rafters as we played!”

Supercut: Darlene Love On Letterman
Via Stereogum:
Every year since 1986, David Letterman has invited Darlene Love to perform on the last show of the year before Christmas. Every year, she sings “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” her Phil Spector-produced 1963 Christmas classic. Every year, Paul Shaffer and a sprawling cast of musicians backs her up. Next May, Letterman will retire from late-night TV, which means that when Love appears on Friday’s show to sing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” it’ll be the last time singing it on Letterman’s show.By far my favorite Xmas song. Watch this supercut of Love's performances on Letterman over the last three decades.

Martha Wash Celebrates 30 Years Of It's Raining Men On Letterman
Last night disco diva Martha Wash appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman to celebrate the 30th anniversary of It's Raining Men, which was co-written by Letterman sidekick Paul Schaffer and the late gay Oscar winner Paul Jabara. As you'll see, Martha put on quite the production.

Jukebox The Ghost - Schizophrenic
Here's Jukebox The Ghost's Letterman performance from last night which I raved about in today's open thread. Watch this now, their label's Sales Prevention Team will probably get it pulled from YouTube. Song of the year for me, so far.

Anti-Letterman Rally In Times Square
Socialism and illegal immigration were just some of the completely unrelated topics being shouted about by the crackpots at a protest of David Letterman's joke about Sarah Palin's daughter.

Letterman On Palin Jokes Flap
I haven't mentioned this story yet, but if you haven't been following it elsewhere, Letterman explains everything in this clip. Basically, the other night he joked that while Sarah Palin was in town earlier in the week to attend a Yankees game with Rudy Giuliani, Alex Rodriguez "knocked up" her daughter. Letterman didn't realize that Palin was in town with her 14 year-old, not 18 year-old Bristol.. Palin, understandably, went through the roof.

HomoQuotable - David Mixner
"[W]e laughed Brokeback Mountain right out of an Academy Award. Please lets not allow the same thing to happen to Milk this year."Milk is a movie about our history, our heroes, our struggle and the power of one individual to create change. The movie is a universal story to inspire and give hope to everyone. The movie depicts how hatred can lead to assassination of not only, Supervisor Harvey Milk, but also Mayor George Moscone, because of their ideas and courage. There is nothing funny about this powerful and well done drama.
"So what did David Letterman and James Franco talk about on the Letterman show the other evening. Almost the entire interview was about Franco and Penn kissing. Letterman even left the impression of "ugh" when they talked about two men sharing an intimate moment. This is not acceptable from Letterman and GLAAD should be all over it. Also the producers of Milk should better brief their stars, like Franco, about not falling into the Brokeback Mountain trap. Franco's response should have been to Letterman, "This is not a comedy. It tells the story of an assassinated leader of a civil rights movement and the epic struggle for freedom." Trust me, that would have ended the discussion of kissing.
"If this kind of treatment of Milk continues, we will once again lose the powerful message of an amazing film, lose the awards and lose our history. It is not too late to speak out. Watch the Letterman segment below." - Gay rights activist and author David Mixner, complaining that jokes cost Brokeback Mountain its Oscar and that it may happen again with Milk. Read the entire piece.

McCain To Letterman: "I Screwed Up"
John McCain made a wary return to Letterman last night after weeks of being ridiculed on the show for canceling his last appearance. And man, Letterman really socked it to him, asking tough questions on the Palin selection, on the threats against Obama shouted at McCain rallies, on the ridiculous Bill Ayers thing. And on and on. Letterman should have moderated one of the debates. The below clip from CBS has been heavily edited as has the one on their site. I have no idea why some of the juiciest bits aren't in there.UPDATE: Yielding to complaints about the edited clip, CBS has pulled it and replaced it with the full 23 minute interview (including an added commercial at the beginning, of course.)

Letterman Rips Into McCain
Leaked in advance of tonight's show.
"Something is starting to smell. That's not the John McCain I know. This is not the way a tested hero behaves. Somebody's putting something in his Metamucil."
Late in the clip, Letterman cuts to live shot of McCain sitting a couple of blocks away in an interview with Katie Couric. NOT rushing to the airport as he told the Letterman people when he canceled.

Barack Obama appeared on Letterman last night and Dave immediately launched into the "lipstick on a pig" stupidness. Obama was typically smooth and funny about it.
