Uganda's Gospel Of Intolerance

Today the New York Times published the below short documentary about the influence of American evangelicals in Uganda's continuing violent campaign against LGBT citizens.  Filmmaker Roger Ross Williams writes:
Raised in Pennsylvania, I grew up in the black church. My father was a religious leader in the community, and my sister is a pastor. I went to church every Sunday and sang in the choir. But for all that the church gave me — for all that it represented belonging, love and community — it also shut its doors to me as a gay person. That experience left me with the lifelong desire to explore the power of religion to transform lives or destroy them. I became interested in Uganda, an intensely religious country that attracts many American missionaries and much funding from United States faith-based organizations. The American evangelical movement in Africa does valuable work in helping the poor. But as you’ll see in this Op-Doc video, some of their efforts and money feed a dangerous ideology that seeks to demonize L.G.B.T. people and intensifies religious rhetoric until it results in violence. It is important for American congregations to hold their churches accountable for what their money does in Africa.

MISSOURI: "Ex-Gay" Leader Of Christian Group Suspected In Murder Of Wife

Tyler Deaton, the leader of a Kansas City youth prayer group whose members say has "overcome" his "struggle with being gay," is suspected of ordering the murder of his wife, whose death was allegedly made to look like a suicide.
Three days later, investigators say, 23-year-old Micah Moore would go to police and uncork the terrible secrets that allegedly occurred over several months at a Grandview home where Deaton and other members of his religious group lived. Witnesses told of a clan of young adults making sex part of their religious experience, of men in the group sexually assaulting Bethany over months, and of Deaton’s role as their “spiritual leader.” But Moore’s darkest admission, according to court records, was that Deaton feared Bethany was about to reveal the group’s secrets. Moore confessed that he had murdered Bethany and tried to make it look like suicide, and, according to court documents, he said Deaton told him to do it. Moore alone has been charged, with first-degree murder. Deaton and others in the group are under investigation, prosecutors said.
Deaton's group is part of the International House of Prayer "charismatic movement" headed by the virulently anti-gay Pastor Lou Engle, whose bizarre pronouncements have been covered here on JMG many times. According to members of the group, Deaton was having frequent sex with some of its male members.
Bethany was sexually assaulted over a period of months while drugged with someone else’s prescription anti-psychotic, witnesses in the house told authorities. This was happening, the witnesses alleged, in a period of time that male members in the house were involved in sexual relationships with Deaton, one saying it was part of a “religious experience.” The statements unfolded with Moore allegedly saying that people in the group feared Bethany was about to tell her therapist about the assaults, and that he killed her with the plastic bag over her head at Longview Lake. He did it, his statement to detectives said, because Deaton told him he knew Moore “had it in him to do it."
It's really quite the bizarre story and I encourage you to the read the full report from the Kansas City Star. (Via Christian Nightmares)

UPDATE: The Red Dirt Report takes a closer look at Deaton's sex-Jesus-cult.

UPDATE II: A reader directs us to the many photos on Tyler Deaton's Facebook page, which are presently viewable by the public.  Photos of the accused killer are viewable as well.

Lou Engle: My Prayers Made Prop 8 Pass

We first heard this from Lou Engle back in 2008, but today on The 700 Club the crackpot televangelist repeated his claim that God caused Prop 8 to pass because he'd prayed and fasted for it to happen. Engle was apparently too hungry to fast against Prop 8's eventual overturn.

Pancakes Vs. Jeebus: IHOP Sues Anti-Gay Christian Group For Using Their Acronym

IHOP is suing the International House Of Prayer, the virulently anti-gay group affiliated with whackadoodle preacher Lou Engle, for stealing their famous acronym.
The Kansas City, Missouri-based church group "selected and adopted the International House of Prayer name, knowing it would be abbreviated IHOP. IHOP-KC intended to misappropriate the fame and notoriety of the household name IHOP to help promote and make recognizable their religious organization," the lawsuit says. Lawyers from the pancake restaurant say the odds are stacked against the church group and provided the court with pages and pages of documentation of websites, newsletters and signs on buildings where the prayer group allegedly used the IHOP acronym. The use of the acronym infringes on the restaurant's trademark, the restaurant contends. So, IHOP, the pancake house, is asking a judge to get IHOP, the church group, to stop using the letters IHOP. The restaurant says it has used the acronym for more than 30 years.
The International House of Prayer holds rallies to pray away gay rights. Apparently they also want to pray away copyright law.

Cindy Jacobs Flips Out Over Britney, Madonna And "Gender Mainstreaming"

Nutcase preacher Cindy Jacobs really flipped her Jeebus wig at Lou Engle's The Call hate fest in Sacramento over the weekend. An excerpt via Right Wing Watch:
I want to talk as a mother to the young women today. We know that it’s not just the men who have a problem with pornography and I want to say it like this: girl-on-girl kissing, lesbianism is a plague on our society today. And I want to read the word of God and I want us to pray. Roman 1: 25 says those who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator blessed forevermore, for this reason God game them up to vile passions where even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. I’m going to call on the women and I want to say that it’s time for us to repent. This girl-on-girl kissing, Madonna kissing Britney Spears, and what happened to Britney after that and a lot of other things. I know we’re going out over worldwide television. I want to tell you, bisexuality, every kind of perverse thing, the Bible calls this sin. And I want the women of God to kneel down right now and we are going to put a stop to this in our generation and we are going to say “No More!”
Listen to the naked hatred.

SACRAMENTO: Thousands Of Bigots Gather To Pray Against Gay Rights

Dominionist, extremist, Christofascist preacher Lou Engle gathered several thousand bigots in California's capital today to pray against same-sex marriage and for "authority over Jezebel and San Francisco values."
The Sacramento event, Engle said, helped to highlight immoral laws being passed out of the Capitol and called on traditional marriage to be restored. "If marriage is going to be upheld between a man and a woman, which we believe is the best for families and children and society, then right now, it seems we need divine intervention," Engle said in an interview between appearances on stage. "That's part of the reason we're coming here, to pray, but also to take a stand and be a prophetic voice to stand for truth."
The above-linked story notes that "offering stations" were set up throughout the audience. Jackpot. Another Lexus for Lou Engle, who, should you have forgotten, is one of the American evangelists responsible for Uganda's "kill gays" bill.

UPDATE: JMG reader Andy sends us the "trailer" for yesterday's event. Scary.

PhoboQuotable - Rev. Lou Engle

"If we’re struggling with a homosexual, same-sex desire, LET THE BIBLE KILL YOU, rather than make it easier for you, and say well, there must be a better scriptural answer to this … Brothers and sisters, let the Bible kill you rather than you twist the scriptures! And in that killing, it will break you so that you can find a redeemer and a savior! Oh, I believe there are those struggling with same-sex desires who will stand, having done everything to stand, and maybe they won’t find the deliverance they’ve been looking for, but they refuse to let the world dictate their theology; they’re gonna stand on the Bible. And they may go for thirty years in an agonizing struggle, but they go into heaven because they stood with God rather than standing with the ideologies of this world." - Dominionist preacher Lou Engle, in a speech recorded by Evan Hurst at Truth Wins Out.

Engle, who has supported Uganga's "kill gays" bill, is traveling the country with his ministry TheCall, exhorting young people to help his campaign to overturn democracy in the United States and institute a government based on "Biblical truth." Read Evan Hurst's report.

Dominionist Lou Engle Coming To Maine

Good As You notes that evangelical freak show Lou Engle, who rabidly rallied his vacant-eyed troops over Prop 8, is coming to Maine. From Engle's site:
In 2007, in California, thousands of believers fasted for a 40-day period and prayed that God would restrain the spiritual powers that are behind the homosexual agenda and the drive to redefine marriage. Three days before the vote on Proposition 8, 30,000 people gathered together in solemn assembly to invoke heaven's assistance in the great heavenly battle as well as to pray for God's power to be released for the freedom and healing of thousands struggling with same-sex attraction who yearn to be transformed by Christ. Proposition 8 was upheld through the incredible mobilization of the state and we believe through divine assistance as well. [snip]

We know this is last minute, and we don’t have the time to make fancy fliers and websites. We also understand that everyone has already made their plans, but we are asking you to join us Friday and Saturday, October 23rd and 24th, to cry out to heaven and release a sound of deliverance for our land and our nation! We are asking you to burn with the urgency of the call and make the necessary sacrifice to join us. We are asking you to spread the word, to begin the fast, and gather with us over this weekend - whatever the cost may be!
Here's the clip Engle terrified his Christianist troops with for Prop 8. It's nightmarish. Engle is a "dominionist" who wants to install a Christian theocracy in the United States.

Anti-Gay Charlotte Pride Protest Uneventful

Led by Pastors Michael Brown and Lou Engle, about 500 red-shirted Christianists protested at Charlotte Pride this weekend.
“We don’t think it’s best for a little boy to go to school dressed as a girl,” Dr. Michael Brown, director of Coalition of Conscience, said. “We don’t think it’s best to have male-male, female-female couples that guarantee a child won’t have a mother or a father.” So they walked from First Baptist Church to the event to worship and pray. “We’re praying to make them know that god, he loves them, that they’re not cast out, rejected and hated, and that there is a better way than gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, and that’s found in Jesus,” Brown said. They also wanted to send a message in hopes of stopping what they’re calling an activist agenda. “By activist agenda, we mean those who came out of the closet 40 years ago and are trying to put conservative Christians in the closet,” Brown said.
Participants in the "God Has A Better Way" rally had to sign an internal agreement that they would not engage in name-calling or abusive language during their protest. Police reported no incidents.
