RELATED: The Heritage Foundation, which is now headed by former Sen. Jim DeMint, was a cosponsor of the FRC's Hate Summit. Last week the New York Times reported that the architects of the shutdown were a cabal of evangelical leaders including Tony Perkins.

From a letter signed by over 100 anti-gay and religious (mostly Catholic) groups from around the world:
The signing entities below are highly concerned about the heavy attacks that the Russian Federation is facing due to its recent Federal Law of June 29, 2013 No. 135-FZ “On Amendments to Article 5 of the Federal Law On Protection of Children from Information Harmful to their Health and Development ...” that protects innocence and moral formation of children by prohibiting propaganda of "non-traditional sexual relationships" among them. The letter is being heralded across Teabagistan today as being from "over 100 human rights groups." Seriously. Among the American signees is the virulently anti-gay hate group Mission America, home to Linda Harvey.
We affirm that the natural family created through the marriage of a man and a woman is the foundation of any human society and is entitled to protection by society and the State as stated in the international Human Rights norm s, including Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Art. 16 (3). Any harmful initiative for the natural family is destructive for the society as a whole. We also affirm that the children need special protection due to their innocence and immaturity.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will tap freshman Tea Party Rep. Tim Scott to replace the retiring Sen. Jim DeMint.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, three Republican officials familiar with the process confirmed to The New York Times the decision to select Mr. Scott. Aides to the governor declined to comment before the noon announcement. Ms. Haley seriously considered a number of potential contenders, particularly Jenny Sanford, the ex-wife of former Gov. Mark Sanford, who supported Ms. Haley in her race two years ago. But in choosing Mr. Scott, she selected a lawmaker with a strong conservative voting record during his two years in Congress. Additionally, Mr. Scott, 47, offers a unique story and background, one that is in scant supply in the Republican Party right now. Raised by a single mother, he was, by his account, a lost child who struggled with school and with life until a Chick-fil-A franchise owner took him on as a protégé and schooled him in conservative principles.Bolding is mine. Scott will become the first black Senator from the South in over a century.

The Wall Street Journal reports today that GOP Sen. Jim DeMint will resign from office next month in order to head the nation's most prominent right-wing think tank.
South Carolina U.S. Senator Jim DeMint will replace Ed Feulner as president of the Heritage Foundation. Mr. DeMint will leave his post as South Carolina's junior senator in early January to take control of the Washington think tank, which has an annual budget of about $80 million. Sen. DeMint's departure means that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor, who will have to run in a special election in 2014. In that year, both Mr. DeMint's replacement and Sen. Lindsey Graham will be running for reelection in South Carolina. Mr. DeMint was reelected to a second term in 2010. The 61-year-old senator had announced earlier that he would not seek a third term.Right-wing sites have already lit up this morning with speculation about DeMint's replacement.

Chris Barron says the CPAC boycott is insignificant because most conservatives totally welcome having gay people on their side. Yeeeeah.

Sen. Jim DeMint has joined the boycott of CPAC 2011 because of GOProud's sponsorship, prompting the above image by Facebooker Tracy Knauss. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has also backed out of attending, although he won't say why. At the current rate of defections, the nation's "largest annual conservative conference" will by attended by nobody but GOProud and the NRA. Wingnut infighting is hilarious.Labels: CPAC, GOP, GOProud, infighting is funny, Jim DeMint, Quislings, wingnuts

Saying that Tea Party hero Sen. Jim DeMint is facing attacks from within the GOP because his support for anti-gay teabaggers cost them their Senate majority, the Family Research Council is asking for one million of their followers to pledge to pray for the asshat bigot every day. After what should have been a proud moment for all Republicans on Tuesday night, the GOP is angry about "what ifs"--particularly if it had won seats in Colorado, Delaware, and Washington--defeats they blame almost unanimously on Jim DeMint. Apparently, fighting to bring true conservative candidates into the Senate instead of weak-kneed moderates who oppose the Republican platform makes Sen. DeMint a villain. One of his colleagues said, "It's like you're on the five-yard line ready to score, and the quarterback calls the play, and some member of your team tackles one of your members and keeps you from scoring." The only problem is that the "quarterback" is the old guard of the Republican Party. The same folks who backed big spending, pro-abortion, pro-gay GOP lap-dog incumbents. At this writing, almost 13,000 FRC followers have signed the prayer pledge.

Tea Party hero Sen. Jim DeMint, who last month declared that gays shouldn't be allowed to be school teachers, says that one cannot be a fiscal conservative without being a social conservative as well. Wait, we thought the teabaggers didn't care about anything but shrinking government?

"Common sense and clear thinking dictates that if we love America’s teenagers, we will resolve to put healthy, mature role models in front of them right at the time when they are making sexual decisions of enormous and lasting impact. I’m happy to openly, publicly and unreservedly declare that Sen. DeMint is right. We should see to it that our teachers provide the kind of examples for our youth that are worthy of imitation in every way, including sexual expression. If we love America’s students, and love America and want only the best for her, we can do no less." - American Family Association radio host Bryan Fischer, quoted by Right Wing Watch who notes that DeMint is a frequent guest on Fischer's show."It is clear that the socially conservative big government wing of the Republican Party is desperate to undermine and co-op the message and enthusiasm of the tea party movement. After a year and a half of attacking the tea party movement for not being focused on their pet issues, it is clear that Tony Perkins and his crowd have embraced a new strategy – if you can’t beat’em, join’em. The tea party movement is about limiting the size and scope of the government and empowering indiviudals. The grassroots tea party activists should reject attempts by Washington Republicans like Jim DeMint to corrupt the movement’s conservative message."

GOP Sen. Jim DeMint told a group of South Carolina pastors on Friday that "open homosexuals" and unmarried women should not be allowed to teach in public schools. In addition to reiterating anti-choice talking points on abortion and backing "traditional marriage," according to the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, the senator went further and "said if someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn't be teaching in the classroom and he holds the same position on an unmarried woman who's sleeping with her boyfriend -- she shouldn't be in the classroom." Controversy over DeMint's position on this issue first arose in 2004 during a Senate debate, when he was asked whether he agreed with the state party's platform that said openly gay teachers should be barred from teaching public school. DeMint said he agreed with that position because government shouldn't be endorsing certain behaviors.Referencing the controversy that resulted the last time DeMint made such remarks, he said, "(When I said those things,) no one came to my defense. But everyone would come to me and whisper that I shouldn't back down. They don't want government purging their rights and their freedom to religion."

"Marriage is a religious institution. The federal government has no business redefining what it is. Governments should not be in the business of promoting a behavior that’s proven to be destructive to our society.” - State rights advocate Sen. Jim DeMint, who doesn't think states should have the right to grant same-sex marriage. Labels: bigotry, GOP, hypocrisy, Jim DeMint, PhoboQuotable, Senate, South Carolina
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) wants to create a "loser pays" system for civil lawsuits so groups like the ACLU will be "dissuaded from intimidating Christians and conservative groups." "They've done a lot of harm," he states bluntly. "They're the group that constantly attacks the Boy Scouts for having 'God' in their pledge and wanting to set their own standards. The ACLU uses the threat of lawsuits and the cost of those lawsuits to back down school boards. They can drag people into court [and] they have a whole lot of power as attorneys to intimidate people." So DeMint argues there needs to be tort reform. "I just think we need to change our laws to create a 'loser pay' system, so that if they sue someone and lose, the defendants get...their court costs back," says the lawmaker. "That would make [the ACLU] a little more hesitant when they go out and try to attack those who are doing anything that's faith-related in our culture."DeMint claims that those attacked by the ACLU know that even if they win, they can't recover the money spent defending themselves.
