Somebody wants to be vice president. Just weeks after abandoning his campaign for president, Tim Pawlenty is injecting himself back in with the endorsement of Mitt Romney. The expression of support for his former foe is a quick turnabout for the former Minnesota governor, who earlier this summer lampooned Romney over his "Obamneycare" healthcare reform plan. It also comes as the GOP race for president has entered a newly competitive phase between Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, and Perry, the current governor of Texas.

And the first post-Iowa domino falls. Expect three or four more of these in the next few days.

The latest edition of NOM's summer hate bus tour kicked off today in Iowa with doomed GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty. Good As You has the list of the anti-gay hate group leaders featured in the above photo. It appears that this year's tour is drawing the same tens of supporters as last year's laugh-fest did.

MSNBC's reliable Thomas Roberts goes right for NOM's hypocrisy. And after Slaggie Gallagher called him out, Tim Pawlenty obediently belly crawls on board NOM's hate express.

NOM heralds this ad with "The race for marriage voters in Iowa intensifies!!"

"Not only is Pawlenty brave, he's right. As FRC's Peter Sprigg explains in his 'Top 10 Myths about Homosexuality,' there is no such thing as a "gay gene." Instead, research points to a mix of developmental factors to explain the behavior. Even the Obama administration, when it refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), cited a 'growing scientific consensus that sexual orientation is... immutable.' Yet the only source it could produce to support its claim was a 1992 study, which was debunked shortly afterward by a pro-homosexual researcher! Hats off to Governor Pawlenty for knowing his science and refusing to be swayed by one singer's delusions about sexuality." - Tony Perkins, via press release.Labels: bigotry, Family Reseach Council, hate groups, religion, Tim Pawlenty, Tony Perkins
A long list of repulsive anti-gay scumbags will gather here in Minneapolis this weekend "in defiance" of the Netroots Nation convention. Confirmed to attend: Andrew Breitbart, Michelle Malkin, Michele "Crazy Eyes" Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, Herman "Gays Are Sinners" Cain, Virginia AG Ken Cuccinelli, and GOProud's Jimmy LaSalvia. GOProud won't be allowed to actually participate, of course, but they'll be holding a happy hour in one of the Netroots host hotels. (This one, in fact. Hmm, about that JMG meetup...)Labels: Andrew Breitbart, GOProud, Jimmy LaSalvia, Michele Bachmann, Minneapolis, Netroots Nation, scumbagginess, Tim Pawlenty

Nate Silver: It does look like Republicans have some legitimate reason to worry. In the previous five competitive primaries — excluding 2004 for the Republicans, when Mr. Bush won re-nomination uncontested — each party had at least two candidates whose net favorability ratings were in the positive double digits, meaning that their favorables bettered their unfavorables by at least 10 points. All five times, also, the nominee came from among one of the candidates in this group. Republicans have no such candidates at this point in time.

How much do some CPAC attendees want Pawlenty to be the next president? So much so that they'll launch into chants of "USA! USA!" after the most tepid of statements.

"I understand that Pawlenty is trying hard to get people to pay attention to his campaign. Its certainly a challenge for someone with such little stature in the conservative movement to compete with high profile conservative leaders like Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, etc. Unfortunately for Pawlenty, comments like this simply show how totally out-of-touch he is with the issues that rank and file conservatives care about. If he wants to show he is a committed social conservative he would be much better served talking about the need to defund Planned Parenthood, end federal funding for abortion, reign in an out of control judiciary and support for a parents rights amendment to protect home-schoolers." - GOProud head Chris Barron, seizing upon Pawlenty's anti-DADT repeal statements to get out his own group's social agenda.

"The Family Leader and other organizations have taken a position in favor of traditional marriage. I don’t distance myself from that position — I embrace it. I support the notion that we, as a society, should continue to elevate traditional marriage, that it should remain as between a man and a woman, and that all other domestic relationships are not the same as traditional marriage.Labels: bigotry, douchenozzles, Iowa, marriage equality, Minnesota, religion, Tim Pawlenty
