NOM Busted Again For Fake Photo
JMG reader Gary points out the above photoshop fakery seen yesterday on NOM's Facebook page. You may recall that NOM has been busted for faking massive crowds in the past, perhaps most notably when they used an image from an Obama rally in St. Louis in a post which implied that tens of thousands attended an anti-gay rally in New Hampshire. As we all know, NOM's hate marches on the Supreme Court have been hilarious failures.

Upcoming Meme Alert
After it happened to him, Georgia state Rep. Earnest Smith decided to try and make it illegal to harass somebody by photoshopping their face into porn scenes.
Earnest Smith has a problem: he doesn't take too kindly to images with his head Photoshopped onto the bodies of male porn stars, and he's introduced a bill to ban the practice. "Everyone has a right to privacy," he told Fox News. "No one has a right to make fun of anyone. It's not a First Amendment right." Rep. Smith's bill would impose up to a $1,000 fine, one year in prison, or both on anyone that "intentionally causes an unknowing person wrongfully to be identified as the person in an obscene depiction." This specifically includes "the electronic imposing of the facial image of a person onto an obscene depiction."Smith says he doesn't care if his bill does violate the First Amendment.
“They (parody creators) live for something like this,” Smith said. “They are vulgar. This is about being vulgar. We’re becoming a nation of vulgar people.” Not everyone shares Smith’s sentiments. “He’s the conductor of his own crazy train,” one lawmaker told FoxNews.com. Georgia Politics Unfiltered blogger Andre Walker said he’s behind the photoshopped pictures of Smith. “I did exactly what Rep. Smith wants to make illegal,” Walker, who has referred to Smith’s bill as “asinine,” wrote on his blog.We can all guess what the next meme will be.
“I pasted a picture of Smith’s head onto the body of a male porn star.” “The first Amendment to the Constitution of the United States protects all forms of speech, not just spoken word,” Walker said. “It attempts to regulate speech and I doubt it would stand up in a court of law.” The blogger added, “I cannot believe Rep. Earnest Smith thinks I’m insulting him by putting his head on the body of a well-built porn star.”

Photoshop Of The Day
I almost passed on posting this Photoshop job on what is alleged to be a page from Mitt Romney's high school yearbook. But since so many of Vanity Fair's readers are willing to believe that it's real, that alone is an indictment of what people think about Romney's character.

AMA Denounces Photoshop
The American Medical Association says that image manipulation programs like Photoshop are helping push young women into eating disorders. The use of photo retouching doesn't just make for unrealistic images – it can also be bad for your health. The American Medical Association has taken a stand against the Photoshopping of images since "such alterations can contribute to unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image – especially among impressionable children and adolescents, according to a decision announced this week. The AMA has adopted a new policy that encourages ad agencies to work with agencies devoted to child and adolescent health to develop guidelines for ads.

Photoshop Of The Day
Jezebel reports:Ultra Orthodox Hasidic newspaper Der Tzitung is telling its readers like it isn't- by editing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from the now-iconic Bin Laden raid Situation Room photo. Oy vey. The religious paper never publishes pictures of women, as they could be considered "sexually suggestive." Apparently the presence of a woman, any woman, being all womanly and sexy all over the United States' counterterrorism efforts was too much for the editors of Der Tzitung to handle. Also removed from the photo was a female counter-terrorism expert.

Birther Birthplace Billboard Busted
World Net Daily was forced to admit that the infamous "Birthplace of Barack Obama" sign in Kenya is a photoshopped hoax when the man who took the original photo of the sign (which is actually in Oman) came forward. The best part is what the Arabic script on the faked sign really says.Caleb Payne, a former Arabic linguist for the National Security Agency, saw the billboard allegedly from Kenya and tells WND: "I can assure you that the sign is a fake, not because of the picture, but because the Arabic text is completely incorrect. First, it is written left-to-right (Arabic is actually written from right to left) and second: the characters are not connected. Still funny, though! If you are curious, the Arabic reads as follows: Under Kenya is the Arabic for 'Hawaii.' The text at the bottom reads: 'Not Barack Obama's birthplace.'" The issue of whether Obama is legally qualified to serve in the White House continues to be one of high importance for many Americans.

FBI Photoshop Fail
When the FBI passed around their "computer-aged" photo of Osama Bin Laden a few days ago, a Spanish politician recognized Osama's hairstyle. Gaspar Llamazares said he would no longer feel safe travelling to the US after his hair and parts of his face appeared on a most-wanted poster. He said the use of a real person for the mocked-up image was "shameless". The FBI admitted a forensic artist had obtained certain facial features "from a photograph he found on the internet". The digitally-altered photos of the al-Qaeda leader, showing how he might look now, aged 52, were published on the state department's Rewards for Justice website on Friday. Officials said they had adapted a 1998 file image to take account of a decade's worth of aging, and possible changes to facial hair. The FBI responded with a "whoopsie!"

Subway Stalker
JMG reader Clint in Boston took my photo of the Astor Place subway entrance and did some Photoshoppery magic, including popping me into the picture. It's like an artist's rendition of a future subway stop with a stalkery old dude added for local color. Love it.Labels: "celibacy", coolness, NYC, photoshop, subway

More On Aretha's Hat
It cracked me up yesterday to watch my post about Aretha's hat become one of the most searched items in almost five years on writing JMG. Aside from zillions of Google hits, the post was top ranked over on BuzzFeed's viral videos chart, where readers went into a photoshopping frenzy. My favorites are my SF pal Ggreg Taylor's creation below (pulled from his Facebook profile) and the US Airways jet.
UPDATE: That didn't take long. JMG reader Tate has given Father Tony and myself the Aretha treatment.
