NY Post Praises Evan Wolfson

"In a rarity for any US advocacy group, Freedom to Marry is closing up shop 'simply' because it won. The move is applause-worthy because it’s so rare for any 'public interest' lobby. Most outfits just find some new cause to justify keeping the money rolling in. 'We achieved the goal we set out to do,' said Evan Wolfson, Freedom to Marry’s founder and president, when the Supreme Court ruled last month that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to get married. Instead of becoming 'an organization that flails around and figures out what to do next,' Wolfson will help the group’s 30 or so employees find other 'good-guy causes' to work on. Freedom to Marry has the class to roll the credits once the 'hero' has won. Here’s hoping it starts a trend." - From the editorial board of the Rupert Murdoch-owned New York Post.

New York Post Cover Draws Heat

Rupert Murdoch's New York Post cover is drawing heat from all sides today.  Business Insider recaps:
The New York Post has provoked enraged responses on Twitter with its offensive cover about the murder of an Hasidic Jewish landlord which asked "Who didn't want him dead?" Menachem Stark, a 39-year-old father of eight, was shoved into a light-colored Dodge caravan outside his Brooklyn office late Thursday. His charred body was found this weekend on Long Island. The Post — which referred to Stark as a "slain slumlord" — prompted a number of angry Tweets, including one from Yaacov Behrman, who wrote, "I am deeply disturbed by the cover of the New York Post, "who didn't want him dead." How about this young boy?!" Another person tweeted, "It's heart-wrenching that this is leading the @nypost website today. 'Who DIDN'T want him dead?' SHAME ON YOU!" The lead of the Post story said Stark had "so many enemies that investigators say they almost don't know where to start looking." “He’s a Hasidic Jew from Williamsburg, and we think he’s a scammer," the Post quoted one unnamed investigator as saying.
A Facebook group titled "Condemn The New York Post" already has 2000 members.

New York Post Endorses Quinn & Lhota

Christine Quinn today earned a newspaper hat trick as the third of New York City's three biggest dailies joined the New York Times and the New York Daily News in endorsing her. (Like the Times did on Saturday, the Post has also endorsed Republican front-runner Joe Lhota, the former head of the MTA.)  But the Rupert Mudoch-owned Post cannot resist slamming Quinn's "lurch to the left" even as it endorses her.
If we were seeing today the Chris Quinn that we saw a few years ago, this would be a more enthusiastic endorsement. As speaker, Quinn often showed courage and responsibility by siding with Mayor Bloomberg, as well as by opposing the dangerous proposals of her far more radical council members. Ever since her mayoral campaign kicked in, however, she has lurched hard to the left, embracing the kind of ridiculous nostrums for which she had previously shown considerable and rightful contempt.

A perfect example: the ill-advised mandatory paid sick-leave bill, which for years she courageously refused to bring to a council vote, only to reverse herself last spring when she was sharply criticized by her mayoral opponents and the unions. Similarly, she first declared unconditionally she would retain Ray Kelly as police commissioner. Then she made her proposal for an NYPD inspector general, a new and unnecessary layer of oversight. That turned the race into a referendum on the police, and stop-and-frisk came under withering political attack. Hard to imagine Ray Kelly would take her up on the job offer now.
The primary is two weeks from tomorrow.

Late Post Edition Redeems Morning Fail

Everybody was so disappointed by this morning's yawn-inducing "Meet Carlos Danger" cover headline by the New York Post. (I didn't even bother with it here.)  But the Post headline crew redeemed themselves with today's Metro edition.

NY Post Publishes "Ex-Gay" Column

"While my sexual orientation is an important part of me, so is my faith. If SOCE therapy had been banned, as the SPLC is seeking to do by misusing consumer-fraud laws, I wouldn’t have simply chosen to accept my attractions. Instead, I would’ve remained stuck in shame, isolation and pain. It’s ironic that an SPLC victory in this lawsuit would bring about the very effect it claims to be trying to prevent. I understand that my life may have little appeal to others. You may be surprised that people like me even exist; we have little reason to make an issue of our sexuality, so you seldom find us waving placards in parades or rallies, but there are a lot of us." - Mormon "ex-gay" leader Jeff Bennion, writing for the New York Post.

Disney Investigates "Handi-Scam"

Disney executives say they are looking into a New York Post report which claims that "wealthy Manhattan moms" are hiring disabled people who pretend to be family members in order to cut into the head of the lines at popular theme park attractions.
The “black-market Disney guides” run $130 an hour, or $1,040 for an eight-hour day. “My daughter waited one minute to get on ‘It’s a Small World’ — the other kids had to wait 2 1/2 hours,” crowed one mom, who hired a disabled guide through Dream Tours Florida. “You can’t go to Disney without a tour concierge,’’ she sniffed. “This is how the 1 percent does Disney.” The woman said she hired a Dream Tours guide to escort her, her husband and their 1-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter through the park in a motorized scooter with a “handicapped” sign on it. The group was sent straight to an auxiliary entrance at the front of each attraction.
Disney allows patrons in wheelchairs to bring up to six people to the head of the line. CNN has more:
"It is unacceptable to abuse accommodations that were designed for guests with disabilities," [Disney] spokesman Bryan Malenius told CNN Wednesday. "We are thoroughly reviewing the situation and will take appropriate steps to deter this type of activity." Reports of the alleged practice sparked fury on social media, with some people calling the actions "crazy," "awful," and "despicable." But others defended the idea, arguing it's a way to help some disabled people make good money.

NY Post Slams Gay Left

Noting the criticism of Sen. Rob Portman's reversal on marriage from the left, the New York Post today published an editorial titled "When Yes Isn't Enough."
Never mind that embracing gay marriage in the GOP carries a risk while it’s completely safe for a Democrat. Or that another prominent flip-flopper on the issue — Barack Obama — also invoked personal experience (conversations with his daughters about friends with same-sex parents). Or that a good part of the effort to persuade opponents to shift has been based on the slogan, “We are your children.” Jimmy LaSalvia, executive director of the conservative gay-rights group GOProud, explains the attacks on Portman this way: “It just goes to show that the gay left hates conservatives no matter what their position on marriage.” We’ll leave it at this: What kind of activist asks people to have a change of heart, and then berates them when they do?
The Post and LaSalvia conveniently fail to note that Portman's support also came with a call for the Supreme Court to "stay out" of marriage equality.  Since LaSalvia is a Tenther, we presume that he feels the same way.

GLAAD Bans NY Post From Event

The 2013 GLAAD Media Awards take place in Manhattan on Saturday, where Madonna will present Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo Award.  Not in attendance will be the New York Post, whose press pass request has been denied due to the paper's history of nasty references to transgender people. GLAAD writes:
GLAAD was founded in 1985 to challenge The New York Post's blatantly anti-gay coverage of the HIV/AIDS crisis. More than 27 years later, the paper continues to defame the LGBT community with its sensational framing of transgender stories and its disgraceful practice of referring to transgender people with vulgar slurs. "The Post has been digging its feet in the ground for too long on this issue," said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. "Transgender people, particularly those who are victims of crime, deserve more than the vile slurs and underhanded 'jokes' with which the Post describes them. Until this paper changes its ways and apologizes for the damage done, GLAAD has no interest in supporting their work."
Just last week a Post headline used the word "she-male" to describe the victim of an assault by a New York City fireman.

Slave To The Schism

Gotham's tabloid readers are getting a look at the straight S&M scene via a New York Post accounting of a female slave who has been busted for stalking her former master after a tumultuous breakup.
Unlike the bondage novice in the hit book “Fifty Shades of Grey,’’ the longtime fetish slave of a Manhattan investment banker yesterday told The Post that she went into her own sex-slave role with her eyes wide open. “I like leather and latex,” said Frankie Santiago, 27, who eagerly did the kinky bidding of bondage-loving beau Edward Sonderling before the pair’s relationship imploded. The petite, pretty Santiago spoke at her family’s Bergenfield, NJ, home a day after she was arraigned on charges of stalking, criminal mischief and harassment after a bitter breakup with Sonderling. While she was reluctant to talk about her own passion for the kinky lifestyle, Santiago had no problem effusing about the man she fell in love with in sex dungeons and orgy-fueled parties. “He had this reputation before he dated me — his reputation preceded me,’’ she said. “So when he started coming on to me and pursuing me, I was really flattered."
