Today's Lies From David Barton

"Congress has passed what’s called ENDA, Employment Non-Discrimination Act, passed this in ’06 under Pelosi and Reid and at that point in time, it says you cannot discriminate on the basis of hiring. As a result, the president has now announced that faith based groups have to hire homosexuals; not an option, you have to because federal law says you cannot discriminate on the basis of identity. So if a pedophile comes to the church and says I want to run your nursery, you can’t say no because that’s discriminating on the basis of identity. If a homosexual comes and says I want to be your youth director and you say no, you can’t do that, you can’t distinguish on the basis of gender." - Debunked Christianist "historian" David Barton, speaking on a wingnut podcast. Today's Lie From Tony Perkins

Oh brother. The Denver bakery was allowed to decline the requested message on the cake, which was "Homosexuality Is Detestable." As the local press reported at the time of the complaint, the bakery advertises its various Christian-related products such a baptismal celebration cakes, etc. There really is nothing Tony Perkins will not lie about.

PolitiFact Calls Out Perkins As A Liar

During yesterday's Fox News Sunday showdown with Ted Olson, Tony Perkins declared that social science has conclusively proven that children do best in households headed by opposite-sex parents. The Pulitzer Prize-winning PolitiFact was quick to rate Perkins as a big fat liar.
The American Psychological Association produced a comprehensive review of studies going back three decades. The most relevant section focuses on research that compares the children of lesbian or gay parents. The studies looked at children in terms of their school performance, their relations with their peers, intelligence, self-esteem and a number of other variables. According to this review, "the belief that children of lesbian and gay parents suffer deficits in personal development has no empirical foundation."

Perkins said that based on social science, we know "that children do best with a mom and a dad." The research cited on the website of Perkins’ group, the Family Research Council, does not provide any support. It relies on books rather than peer-reviewed research, it quotes selectively or mischaracterizes from the work it cites, or at best, challenges the quality of the methodology behind findings that go against its position. In contrast, we found recent peer-reviewed social science research that finds that at the very least, children of lesbian parents do as well as other children.

We rate Perkins’ claim False.
BOOM.

Pat Robertson Renews Old Leg Press Lies

Like Eugene Delgaudio, Pat Robertson is today dipping into the old well of his beyond ridiculous lies. Right Wing Watch catches you up on the back story.
Back in 2006, Robertson said he could leg press 2,000 lbs. The New York Times wrote at the time: “According to a related news release and photographs on the network's website, Mr. Robertson has leg-pressed 2,000 pounds, even though (as many online commentators have pointed out) he is 76 years old and the current world record is 1,335 pounds.” GNC eventually pulled its Robertson-branded protein smoothie, “Pat’s Diet Shake,” but not before the episode raised questions about, as the Virginian-Pilot put it, “the fuzzy line between his tax-exempt operations and his profit-making ventures.”
Pat's Diet Shake is still selling online at a price of $21.99.

Today's Outrage In Teabagistan

Actually the president was asked to record the Nicolay version of the Gettysburg Address (there are at least ten versions) and that one does not include the phrase "under god." Further, it is the Nicolay copy that is preserved at the Library of Congress.  Outraaaaaaage!

Pat Robertson: Gay Men Use Special Rings To Cut People And Give Them HIV

This is possibly the most outrageous thing Pat Robertson has ever said.
Today on the 700 Club, Pat Robertson told co-host Terry Meeuwsen that gay men in cities like San Francisco attempt to spread HIV/AIDS to others by cutting them with a special ring when shaking hands. However, one could not hear Robertson make the remarks on the episode his Christian Broadcasting Network posted online, as the company once again appears to have edited Robertson’s comments after they aired.
Really unfuckingbelievable.

RELATED:  Feel free to tweet CBN (@CBNproducers) and demand a public apology and a retraction of Pat Robertson's disgusting lie.  Also you can call: CBN Main Switchboard (757) 226-7000.

UPDATE:  I've just spoken with Chris Roslan, the head of the PR firm that handles the 700 Club. I told him that merely editing Robertson's disgusting lie out of their re-airings of today's show is not good enough. Roslan said he'd not yet seen today's show and will call me back. I'll let you know if that happens.

UPDATE II: CBN has posted the YouTube clip of its daily segment Bring It On-Line (where the above clip is from) and Robertson's lie is still there as of this writing. Start at the 1:00 mark.

NOM Busted In ANOTHER Whopping Lie

NOM has been busted in one of their most stupid lies yet - and that's really really saying something. From the Chicago Tribune:
The Chicago Bears and former linebacker Brian Urlacher denied any involvement Wednesday with the Ruth Institute -- an affiliate of the National Organization For Marriage, which opposes same-sex marriage -- after an online promotion for the institute stated a clear involvement of the team. In an advertisement for its June gala at an upcoming conference, the California-based group stated, "For now, you should know that we have two fabulous raffle items from the Chicago Bears Organization (and a huge THANK YOU to the Bears for supporting our message)." Below the statement are images of an autographed Urlacher jersey and an autographed black-and-white photo of deceased Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton. "I sign a lot of stuff for charity and I don't always know where it goes," Urlacher told the Tribune. "If I would have known it was for this cause, I wouldn't have done it."
The Chicago Bears issued an official statement: "The two items featured in The Ruth Institute gala invitation were personal donations to (President) Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse. Neither was a club donation, nor do they represent the team's view on any social issues. Any remarks stating otherwise are false."

NOM's Jennifer Roback Morse, as you would expect, tried to weasel her way out of it.
Reached by phone Wednesday afternoon, Morse initially declined comment. But her website later dropped all references to the Bears at the team's request, and Morse issued a statement: "The Ruth Institute is not working with the Chicago Bears organization or any of its players past or present to promote our upcoming auction. The memorabilia we are auctioning off was acquired by me personally, not through the team or players. We understand that the Chicago Bears organization takes no position on social issues, and we regret any confusion we may have caused on this point."
It appears that NOM's story was first questioned earlier today by Equality Matters blogger Carlos Maza.  And once again we see that there is NO LIE, no matter how insanely petty, that NOM is not willing to tell. (Tipped by JMG reader Steven)

Fake Pediatrics Group Attacks AAP

The crackpot American College of Pediatrics, a fake organization hastily assembled by hate groups a couple of years ago, is attacking yesterday's statement by the real professional association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has 60,000 members.
The College does not support the alteration of this time-honored and proven standard to conform to pressures from “politically correct” groups. No one concerned with the well-being of children can reasonably ignore the evidence for maintaining the current standard, nor can they or we ignore the equally strong evidence that harm to children can result if the current standards are rejected,” says Den Trumbull, MD, President of the American College of Pediatricians. “The AAP ignores generations of evidence of health risks to children in advocating for the legality and legitimacy of same-sex marriage and child-rearing.
Family Research Council vice president Peter Sprigg:
This is a highly misleading claim, especially in light of the research published last year by University of Texas sociologist Mark Regnerus—the most methodologically-sound research on the subject ever done, using a large and representative population-based sample—which showed children whose parents had a homosexual relationship suffered numerous disadvantages compared with children raised by their married, biological mother and father.
As everybody knows, including Peter Sprigg, the Regnerus study has been thoroughly debunked. (Tipped by JMG reader Bernie)

Michelle Bachmann Runs Away From CNN

The lyingest liar who ever lied said this at CPAC:
"A new book is out talking about the perks and the excess of the $1.4-billion-a-year presidency that we're paying for. And this is a lifestyle that is one of excess. Now we find out that there are five chefs on Air Force One. There are two projectionists who operate the White House movie theater. They regularly sleep at the White House in order to be readily available in case the first family wants a really, really late show. And I don't mean to be petty here, but can't they just push the play button? We are also the ones who are paying for someone to walk the president's dog, paying for someone to walk the president's dog? Now, why are we doing that when we can't even get a disabled veteran into the White House for a White House tour? That isn't caring!"
The Washington Post yesterday rated Bachmann's CPAC speech a grade of "Four Pinnochios" as not a single one of her claims is true. That Michele Bachmann is an outrageous, unrepentant liar isn't exactly news, but watch how she attempts to outrun a CNN reporter, then attempts to deflect questions about her claims.

NOM Chairman John Eastman Denies He Said "Adopted Kids Are Second-Best"

"An article by the Associated Press, excised in part by The Huffington Post, grossly misrepresents my views on adoption. I believe that couples who adopt children are heroes and do a great service to society, and to the children they adopt. I strongly believe, based on thousands of years of experience and countless social science studies, that children do best when raised by a mother and a father within the bounds of marriage. I commend all those couples who selflessly give of themselves to raise a child who, through no fault of her own, has been deprived of a mother and father. There is nothing 'second best' about adoption." - NOM chairdouche John Eastman, in a statement posted on his hate group's blog.

FACT CHECK: Let's go to the tape. "Certainly adoption in families headed, like Chief Roberts' family is, by a heterosexual couple, is by far the second-best option."
