Christian Boycotts Are Righteous, Gay Boycotts Are Intolerant: Volume 87

"Now is the time for every church that works with World Vision, every Christian musician and artist that partners with World Vision, and every believer that supports World Vision to inform them that they have made a terrible choice and that they will no longer have your support. And for every child who will fall through the cracks because of World Vision’s betrayal of its Christian principles, I say to Richard Stearns and those who made this decision together: You will have to answer to God." - Anti-gay evangelist Michael Brown, writing one week ago for Charisma News.

"We’ve heard it for years now from gay activists: 'You need to be tolerant and inclusive. You need to embrace diversity.' The only problem is that in reality, tolerance, inclusivity and diversity only go one way—and pity the person who dares challenge that narrow and exclusive way. [snip] Perhaps after serving some time in a tolerance re-education camp, [Mozilla CEO Brendan] Eich will be deemed fit to lead the company. And perhaps he can explain to us how, in keeping with his profession of 'inclusiveness,' he is actually supporting those employees who, for religious or other reasons, supported Proposition 8, as he once did. Or does inclusion go only one way? As I’ve said on a number of occasions in the last few years, Orwell would be proud." - Anti-gay evangelist Michael Brown, writing yesterday for Charisma News.

PERU: Evangelist Michael Brown Exports Anti-Gay Hatred To South America

Jeremy Hooper reports for GLAAD:
The sad trend of American anti-LGBT activists traveling across the globe in order to "warn" them from making the pro-LGBT "mistakes" of America continues. The latest example comes from Peru, where vehemently anti-LGBT activist Michael Brown recently spoke to local members of congress, as well as passed out copies of his propaganda book, A Queer Thing Happened to America. This new trend is chilling, frankly. From Jamaica to France to Russia, and many map stops in between, a who's who of American anti-LGBT activists, feeling defeated and increasingly marginalized here at home, are seizing the chance to stir the pot in any nation that might be willing to see them as soothsayers. It is, to the letter, the strategy we saw in Uganda a handful of years ago, when Scott Lively and other Americans started dropping into the nation and telling locals how downright awful we LGBT Americans are. We all know how that one played out.

Quote Of The Day - Michael Brown

"First, gay activists came out of the closet; Second, they demanded their 'rights'; Third, they demanded that everyone recognize those 'rights'; Fourth, they want to strip away the rights of those who oppose them; Fifth, they want to put those who oppose their 'rights' into the closet. I have often been ridiculed for laying out this progression, but it is unfolding in front of our eyes, with a massive shift taking place in just the last year. And with the president of the United States declaring at his second inaugural speech that homosexuality (and more) is equivalent to gender and skin color, a line has been drawn in the sand. And that line in the sand will soon become a line in the courts and law books to the point that anyone who does not affirm homosexual practice will be codified as a bigot or worse." - Anti-gay activist and preacher Michael Brown, writing for Townhall.

FL Gay Activist Michael Brown Murdered

Beloved South Florida gay bar owner and AIDS activist Michael Brown, 50, was found murdered in his West Palm Beach home on Friday. Brown's presumed killer, Brant Hines, 27, stayed in Brown's home for two days after the murder before hanging himself on a bedroom door. Brown and Hines had had a turbulent off and on relationship for several years.
Michael Brown, owner of H.G. Roosters, a bar that has been a gathering spot for the city's gay community for more than two decades, died of blows to the head and multiple stab wounds, an autopsy showed. Police say he was the murder victim in an apparent homicide and suicide in his Flagler Drive apartment Friday evening.

The other man found dead in the apartment, Brant Hines, 27, apparently killed Brown late Wednesday or early Thursday, when a neighbor heard shouting and crashing. Hines was seen with a black eye the following day, when he answered the door of Brown's apartment, and when he walked Brown's two dogs. He answered the telephone Wednesday afternoon and said that Brown was not available when someone from H.G. Rooster's called, police said. Calls on Thursday were not answered.
Brown, known to countless friends and acquaintances as "La La", served on the board of directors for the South Florida chapter of the NAMES Project, touring the AIDS Memorial Quilt to such far-flung international destinations as Capetown, South Africa, as well as all over the United States. While touring the Quilt, Brown was often accompanied by fellow NAMES Project board member Jerry Suarez, who is a dear friend of mine.

Yesterday Jerry told me, "Michael felt a tremendous responsibility as a gay man, somebody who saw many friends die, to dedicate his life to AIDS awareness and to work for the betterment of gay people everywhere." In 2007, Brown received the Fundraiser Extraordinaire Award from the Comprehensive AIDS Program of Palm Beach County

BELOW: A slideshow of the candlelight vigil and remembrance held Saturday at H.G. Roosters in West Palm Beach, via Wes Blackburn's blog post, Good-Bye La-La.

PERSONAL: I first met Michael in the late 80's when I was working in West Palm Beach, but living in Fort Lauderdale, and would occasionally stop by Rooster's for a drink on my way home. Even though I was an infrequent patron, "La La" always knew my name and would charm me with with a joke and a big smile. Several years later I got to know him better when my new job in the music industry (working for Jerry Suarez) brought me into daily contact with the folks working for the NAMES Project. Michael was a big man with a big heart and his untimely end is a terrible loss for the LGBT people of South Florida. A book of condolences is being hosted by the Palm Beach Post. Make your remembrance of Michael Brown here.

Ferguson Decision: 9PM ET
UPDATE: No Indictment

VIDEO: Live-streaming from the streets of Ferguson.

UPDATE: Apparently Twitter shot Michael Brown.
UPDATE II: The NCLR reacts.
We vacillate between heartbreak and outrage at the decision from the grand jury. Injustice is too tame a word for what today’s decision represents. The fact that an unarmed black youth can be fatally shot by a police officer with no accountability or consequence is a chilling commentary on the worth afforded to young, black lives and the sorry state of racial justice in this country. We stand with our colleagues in the broader civil rights community in condemning the grand jury decision, and send our strength and support to the family and friends of Michael Brown and the entire Ferguson community as they continue to grieve their tragic loss. We also urge the Department of Justice to take action to address the longstanding history of racialized intimidation and discrimination by the Ferguson police.
UPDATE III: Lambda Legal reacts.
While there will be debate and disagreement about the facts that led to the grand jury decision announced today in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by Police Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, MO, there is no debate about the facts that a terrible tragedy took place and that another unarmed young black man lost his life at the hands of a police officer. Around the country, we continue to witness similar tragedies and loss of life that have resulted from the deadly combination of racism, police profiling, excessive use of lethal force and a general disregard for the lives of black and brown people.

We mourn Michael Brown and every victim of police violence by continuing to work for justice -- for better policing and fairer laws. As an organization fighting for the rights of LGBT people and people living with HIV, we know that bias and prejudice can lead to injustice. We believe that these issues must be addressed in a systemic way and that regardless of one decision, all of us must be active participants in holding law enforcement agencies accountable for ending the unchecked assault on the lives of all of our communities that are marginalized and criminalized -- whether on the basis of race, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression or economic status. We support U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the Department of Justice in the continued investigation into the shooting of Michael Brown and the policing practices in Ferguson.
UPDATE IV: HRC reacts.
Michael Brown’s family and the American people deserve to have this case fully adjudicated in a public trial. Today’s deeply disappointing decision by the grand jury denies them that opportunity. Until we as a nation make a meaningful commitment to ending police profiling—and to fully prosecuting individual cases of brutality—the kind of violence that ended Michael Brown’s life will only continue. As advocates for equality, it’s our job to show solidarity with a growing national movement to break this cycle of police violence. While we cannot begin to imagine the pain that the Brown family is facing at this moment, we send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to them during this heartbreaking and difficult time. We also stand in solidarity with the family's encouragement of peaceful protests and reflection following this decision.

CHARLOTTE: Activists To Turn Tables On Pride Disruption By Christian Group

As the above photos from last year show, every year anti-gay activist Michael Brown and hundreds of red-shirted followers descend on Charlotte Pride with messages of eternal damnation and promises of gruesome deaths from AIDS. Last year one member of Brown's group purposely marched her four young children through the festival area so that they could be photographed standing near booths selling raunchy items. They were victims, people!

This year, however, local activists plan to stage a protest of their own, this time at Brown's church. Via North Carolina's Q Notes:
MAKE YOUR SIGNS, AND BANNERS!!

Keep the love going as we peacefully protest Fire church Sunday after pride. During the pride event you will have a chance to hear Flip Benham and other representatives of Fire church throwing damnation our way. Lets show them that they cannot come into our community and intimidate us. We will meet just before Service begins, and protest as they gather, we will have a silent protest as service is going and let them have it as they leave for the day. Remember we will be peaceful and respectful, something they don't understand. We are going to STAND TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY to show that our love is stronger than their hate.
Locations, direction, and the time for tomorrow's event are at the above link. Brown calls his followers a "holy army" made up of "uncompromising spirit-filled radicals who will shake an entire generation with the gospel of Jesus by life or death." By life or death. God's Gentle People, indeed.

Michael Brown On Dan Savage

"How can we quote the Bible in support of our moral values when the Old Testament contains laws calling for the stoning of a woman who lost her virginity before marriage? Actually, based on biblical principles, both Judaism and Christianity teach that such laws are not for today.* But could you imagine what America would look like if sex outside of wedlock was as scandalous in our day as it was in ancient biblical times?" - Michael Brown, writing yet another Townhall piece attacking Dan Savage. (*And yet we get Leviticus vomited at our feet on a daily basis.)

Quote Of The Day - Michael Brown

"GLAAD honors men like Joe Jervis, whose JoeMyGod website contains tags describing Christian leaders as 'con men, evil, frauds, liars, scam artists, and douchenozzels,' among those tags that can even be listed here. The JoeMyGod website is also used as a rallying point to target others in the most vulgar and profane ways. I know this firsthand, since it was Joe Jervis’s website that helped launch a short-lived (and ultimately unsuccessful) campaign against my book A Queer Thing Happened to America.

"Commenters joined the attack with posts like these: 'Boys and girls, it's time to tag-spam. Have at it: [with a link to the listing on Amazon]'; and, 'Tag bomb it like Sally Kern's book,' and 'Make sure you leave appropriate tags on the Amazon book review. My favorites ‘author loves rimming’ and ‘guide to fisting.’ (Note that these comments were never removed from the website.) So, in the upside-down world of GLAAD, blogs like this are praiseworthy while men like Chuck Colson and Robert George are not worthy to share their views on the air. This is nothing less than a hypocritical witch hunting campaign by GLAAD, and a poorly executed one at that." - Anti-gay activist and failed author Michael Brown, writing for Townhall.

Wingnuts Turn On Rand Paul, Part Two

"By minimizing the massive implications of redefining marriage — this is not the kind of issue you 'agree to disagree' on — Sen. Paul indicates a fundamental lack of understanding of the inevitable results that will follow should marriage be redefined on a national level. These results include the continued erosion of our freedoms of religion, speech and conscience (churches and Christian leaders, don’t imagine for a moment that these issues will not be forced on you in the near future); more and more gay activist curricula in our children’s schools; the very real potential for the further redefining of marriage (note well that the same media that has been celebrating homosexuality for the last couple of decades is now celebrating polygamy—the newest show is My Five Wives—and polyamory); and even challenges to basic gender distinctions. The fact that he is presently at or near the top of the Republican heap is downright scary." - Anti-gay evangelist Michael Brown, writing for Charisma.

Slain AIDS Activist's Memorial This Sunday

A memorial service for slain AIDS activist Michael "La La" Brown will be held this Sunday at 6:30PM at Bryant Park in Lake Worth, Florida. The park is also host that day to Palm Beach County's Pridefest, for whom Brown was a recent Grand Marshall. Brown, 50, was a beloved bon vivant, a pillar of the South Florida gay community, and was adored by the patrons of H.G. Roosters, his gay bar where he hosted innumerable charity events over the last 20 years.

Brown was murdered in his home last week (presumably) by the man with whom he'd had a tumultuous relationship for several years. The killer stayed in Brown's home for two days after the murder, answering Brown's phone and walking his dogs. He then hung himself on a bedroom door. Police found both bodies when Brown's concerned employees reported him missing.

The NAMES Project/AIDS Memorial Quilt, for whom Brown served on the South Florida board of directors, offers this remembrance:
This week The NAMES Project Foundation lost a long-time volunteer and dear friend, Michael Brown. With a generous spirit and an unwavering commitment to community, Michael was always there, ready to step in and help at a moment's notice. He was loved by many and will be missed by all of us.
NOTE: Pridefest organizers plan to discontinue their admission charge an hour before the end of the event, in order that mourners attending the memorial not be charged to enter Bryant Park.

UPDATE: Tony Plakas of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has written a lovely tribute to Michael Brown, his close friend. The column also ruminates on gay bar culture and how a single saloon such as Brown's H.G.Roosters, run by the right person, can become the soul and spirit of a small town gay community.

Asshat Of The Day - Michael Brown

"How many other community groups feature prominent performances by drag queens at their events? Can you imagine crowds at an Hispanic Pride event, or Black Pride event, or Asian Pride event -- just to name a few -- being entertained by men wearing dresses (or less), hot pink wigs, and matching knee-high boots? And this is part of the LGBT's strategy 'to promote acceptance'? How telling. And how telling that, unmentioned by the Observer, there was a large truck stationed next to the festival offering 'Free HIV Testing.' Yes, just another typical community event. It is also a bit disconcerting to watch young men greet each other with exclamations of 'Hey girl!' before exchanging pecks on the cheek. Does your average child find it confusing to hear men call each other 'girls'?" - Evangelist Michael Brown, on this weekend's Charlotte Pride, where hundreds of red-shirted Christians gathered to scream insults and hatred at attendees. Brown recently self-published a book of anti-gay lies, A Queer Thing Happened To America.

RELATED: Brown is attempting to create another Christianist martyr in a local Charlotte woman who purposely marched her four young boys through the middle of the event in order that they be photographed near "not family friendly" vendors and attendees. We'll be hearing more on this to be sure.

VIDEO: If you can bear it, here's another clip of one of God's Gentle People who spent the day accosting arrivals to let them know that they will die of AIDS and then spend eternity in a lake of fire.

Anti-Gay Charlotte Pride Protest Uneventful

Led by Pastors Michael Brown and Lou Engle, about 500 red-shirted Christianists protested at Charlotte Pride this weekend.
“We don’t think it’s best for a little boy to go to school dressed as a girl,” Dr. Michael Brown, director of Coalition of Conscience, said. “We don’t think it’s best to have male-male, female-female couples that guarantee a child won’t have a mother or a father.” So they walked from First Baptist Church to the event to worship and pray. “We’re praying to make them know that god, he loves them, that they’re not cast out, rejected and hated, and that there is a better way than gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, and that’s found in Jesus,” Brown said. They also wanted to send a message in hopes of stopping what they’re calling an activist agenda. “By activist agenda, we mean those who came out of the closet 40 years ago and are trying to put conservative Christians in the closet,” Brown said.
Participants in the "God Has A Better Way" rally had to sign an internal agreement that they would not engage in name-calling or abusive language during their protest. Police reported no incidents.

Michael Brown Flashback

"I am flattered to be on the SPLC’s hit list and I wear it is as a badge of honor. And being associated with a 'radical' cause is hardly an insult to me if that cause be a righteous one. The more radical, the better. I want to publicly thank the SPLC for making my day and bringing a real smile to my face. I am overflowing with thanksgiving and appreciation." - NARTH supporter and gay pride disruptor, Michael Brown, May 2012, bragging on Townhall.com.

NOTE: Brown has miraculously gone from pride to fury, yesterday writing in the same Townhall space that he is NOW outraged to be ranked alongside David Duke and the KKK. Now outraged, because there's political capital be to had over the blood of a shooting victim.

Michael Brown: American Christianists Will Suffer Because Of The Norway Killer

"The murderous acts of Anders Breivik in Norway will be seen as proof that conservative Christians in America might just turn violent too, as if the demented actions of an anti Muslim, anti multiculturalist Norwegian have anything to do with the spiritual, moral, and cultural aspirations of American Christ-followers who espouse the non-violent teachings and example of the Master himself.

"Sadly, the atmosphere in our country has become so toxic that venerable ministries like Focus on the Family and the American Family Association have been branded as 'hate groups' by the Southern Poverty Law Center, while People for the American Way sends out regular warnings about evangelical Christian leaders on its RightWingWatch website. And this will surely intensify in the days to come in the wake of the tragedy in Norway." - Anti-gay activist and author Michael Brown, lamenting that American Christianists will suffer in the wake of the terrorism in Norway.

NOTE: At least Brown isn't denying the killer's Christianity.

Michael Brown: The Gays Have Won

"I’m not in the least bit surprised by the victories of the 'gay revolution.' In fact, when I first became involved in this specific aspect of the 'culture wars' less than 9 years ago, I saw back then that our side had already lost the battle and that gay activism had won the day. So, these recent developments don’t faze or surprise me in the least. From day one, my trust was in God, not people, and that’s where my trust remains. Attempts to redefine marriage and family and to normalize different sexual orientations may have their day, but that day will pass. In the end, I can truly thank gay activists for helping us understand their world better – including the pain of bullying and the unique struggles they have endured – and for that, I am grateful. And I can admire their zeal and courage, even while differing with their goals. But just as they didn’t throw in the towel when they were a tiny, vilified, minority, much less we will throw in the towel when their revolution seems to be winning the day. This too shall pass." - Anti-gay activist Michael Brown, who says he's still going to fight against gay rights even though he knows we've already won.

Asshat Of The Day - Michael Brown

"[Hillary Clinton's] speech, which was hailed by gay activists worldwide, was an exercise in hypocrisy, not to mention an insult to several billion people worldwide. Mrs. Clinton had the audacity to compare religious or cultural objections to homosexual practice to 'the justification offered for violent practices towards women like honor killings, widow burning, or female genital mutilation,' as if the religious and moral objection to men having sex with men is somehow equivalent to the Muslim practice of honor killings or the Hindu practice of burning widows. [snip]

"She stated that 'opinions [on homosexuality] are still evolving', just as opinions evolved over time with slavery, and 'what was once justified as sanctioned by God is now properly reviled as an unconscionable violation of human rights.' In other words, if you have an issue with the lewd sexual displays at your city’s gay pride parade, or if you’re not comfortable with a man who dresses as a woman using the ladies bathroom, or if you don’t want to see a kid raised by two lesbians and thereby deprived of having a father, or if you believe that God made men to be with women, then you are the moral equivalent of a slave trader or a slave owner." - Michael Brown, writing for Town Hall.

Quote Of The Day - Michael Brown

"Dear Mr. Clinton, with all respect to the office of the president which you held for 8 years, I must say that it is not just ironic that you are now asking the Supreme Court to overturn the legislation you signed into law 17 years ago. It is downright tragic.  May I ask you, sir, if 17 years have changed the nature of men and women, of mother and fathers and children, of the essential elements of a family? Have 17 years changed multiplied thousands of years of human history? Have 17 years changed fundamental faith values embraced by several billion people worldwide?

"Do you honestly believe, Mr. Clinton, that any of the framers of the Constitution countenanced a day in our great nation when men would be marrying men and women marrying women, and in the name of the Constitution, at that? And since when did our Constitution guarantee the government’s endorsement of all romantic attractions and sexual behaviors? And are you genuinely unaware that redefining marriage is just the tip of the iceberg of a massive societal transformation in the name of LGBT rights, including the undoing of gender distinctions?" - Anti-gay activist Michael Brown, writing for Town Hall.
