NEW YORK CITY: JMG Wins Village Voice 2011 Web Award For "Best Politics Blog"

Tonight my loyal companion Dr. Jeff accompanied me to some new hipster nightclub on the Lower East Side where this here website thingy was feted as the 2011 Village Voice Best Politics Blog! Squee! Just like last year! Re-squee! Like last time, I wasn't told who the other blogs in my category were. So I can't congratulate anybody just for being nominated. Which I would totally do. Yes.

The room was packed with the digerati of Manhattan, who were on hand for a slew of web awards such as Best Sports Blog (Deadspin), Best Music Blog (Stereogum), Best Food Blog (Chowhound), and Best Arts Blog (Art Fag Blog). Congrats to all and thanks to the Village Voice for the honor and all that free Chinese beer. I'll add a couple of photos to this post tomorrow and provide a link to the full list of winners when it goes up.

NIGERIA: Worsened Anti-Gay Bill Seen As Slap At Obama's Intl'l Rights Push

In what is seen as a reaction to yesterday's move by the Obama administration, today Nigeria's House introduced a version of the bill passed last week by that nation's Senate. One lawmaker vowed to make the bill even worse that it already is. Box Turtle Bulletin tips us to this report:
A spokesman for the House of Representatives and a cabinet minister in Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer were defiant in the face of Western criticism over the measure. “We have a culture. We have religious beliefs and we have a tradition. We are black people. We are not white,” said Zakari Mohammed, who is also a lawmaker. He said same-sex marriage “is alien to our culture and we can never give it a chance. So if (Western nations) will hold their aid to us, to hell with them.” Information Minister Labaran Maku said “we reserve the right to make our laws without apologies to other countries.” Mohammed vowed lawmakers would proscribe even tougher penalties than those proposed so far. He said “to hell with the super powers if they are for gay marriages.”
In addition to criminalizing taking part in or witnessing a same sex marriage, the revised bill creates the following crimes:.
“Any person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organisation, or directly or indirectly make public show of same sex amorous relationship” is now subject to ten years imprisonment. The same penalty applies to anyone who “supports the registration, operation and sustenance of gay clubs, societies, organisations, processions or meetings in Nigeria.”
Follow Box Turtle Bulletin for their excellent in-depth reporting on the worsening state of LGBT rights across much of Africa.

MASH's Harry Morgan Dies At 96

You probably know him best as Col. Sherman T. Potter. Unless you're my age, in which case he's Detective Bill Gannon.
Morgan's ability to play a variety of roles, dramatic and comedic, made him an actor in demand for half a century. He starred in about a dozen U.S. TV series starting in the 1950s and appeared in movies with some of Hollywood's biggest stars. He appeared in "The Ox-Bow Incident" in 1943 with Henry Fonda, "High Noon" in 1952 with Gary Cooper, "The Glenn Miller Story" in 1954 with Jimmy Stewart and "Inherit the Wind" in 1960 with Spencer Tracy. But it was his role on "M*A*S*H," the long-running series on the CBS network, that earned him his most fame.

Asshat Of The Day - Mat Staver

"This was a man, everyone recognized it’s a man, going into the women’s restroom. Now whether that person has good or ill intentions towards women, no one knows, but the fact of the matter is when you defy common sense and when it says ‘women’s fitting room’ and you allow people other than women in that fitting room, you’re just asking for trouble.

"This is just an absurd policy, this is the so-called LGBT sexual anarchist agenda gone awry, I mean this is the absurdity to which this agenda goes when you ultimately follow it to its logical conclusion. Well what happens if someone says, ‘I’m an adult but I identify myself as a child, I can go and use the little kiddies restroom,’ or silly things like that. But that’s where it goes to." - Liberty Counsel deep thinker Mat Staver, speaking about Macy's. (Via - Right Wing Watch)

RELATED: Staver's radio show co-host added: "If I envision myself as being a kangaroo, I mean let’s go outside of the gender of humanity, somebody might think I’m a monkey or a walrus, you’d say ‘Vic if you said that they would send you to the nut house, they would send you to the insane asylum.’"

JMG Post Generates $100K Donation To Ali Forney Center For Homeless LGBT Kids

Just about the time I was perusing the below Wall Street Journal report, one of its subjects, Frank Selvaggi, emailed me on Facebook to reveal that he and his partner were initially inspired by the Thanksgiving Day guest post made here on JMG by Ali Forney Center executive director Carl Siciliano.
It just "clicked" for Frank Selvaggi and Bill Shea when they decided to make a gift of $100,000 to the Ali Forney Center, a New York-based organization that provides shelter and social services to homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. A few Sundays ago, the television news program "60 Minutes" aired a segment on homeless children in Florida who are living in cars with their families. Messrs. Selvaggi and Shea watched the program."Devastating," says Mr. Selvaggi of the segment. "It just sort of clicked. We need to do something."

And so the couple, longtime LGBT advocates, made a gift close to home and to their hearts. They had some familiarity with the Ali Forney Center and knew that there was a need for more services to support the homeless LGBT youth in New York. Their gift has kicked off a $1 million campaign to raise money to increase the number of beds available to keep homeless LGBT teenagers off the streets at night.
Please excuse me while I spend the remainder of the day levitating over my desk. My grinchy heart just might bust wide open.

RELATED: As noted in the above-linked WSJ report, the generosity of Mssrs. Selvaggi and Shea has launched its own Home For The Holidays fundraising campaign. Please visit the AFC site for daily profiles of their young LGBT clientele. It's cold and wet on the streets of NYC today and better weather is many months away.

Changes For SF's Castro Theater?

Roger Ebert just tweeted that San Francisco's magnificent and legendary Castro Theater is changing its focus away from movies. Others on Twitter report that some of the employees have already been let go. (The theater's online calendar still shows a full schedule through the end of December.) The blog that Ebert links to says that the venue will still host the occasional film festival, but that the building will be remodeled into a live music hall. I'll update this post when more is known.

UPDATE: Well-known SF promoter Marc Huestis denies the above report in a comment left on this post. An excerpt:
The rumors about the CASTRO are largely untrue spread 1 disgruntled employee, and picked up by one unreliable blogger & unfortunately going viral. Please this is THE PROBLEM with the internet- one person can spread their version of events and a blogger will pick it up and bend things out of shape. I have produced events at the Castro for 17 years and know the "inside baseball" and these rumors would be batted down if anyone was industriouness enough to do their job and actually REPORT.

Lesbian Singer/Songwriter Lauro Nyro Named To 2012 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its 2012 inductees. For the fourth time, multiple Grammy winner Donna Summer had been nominated, but was not selected. Of slight solace (to me), late lesbian singer/songwriter Laura Nyro made the cut on her first nomination.
More than a quarter century after they brought hard rock back to the top of the heap, the original lineup of legendary Los Angeles band Guns N' Roses will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. Guns were among the acts named on Wednesday as the Class of 2012, which includes fellow L.A. rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers, iconic New York rap trio the Beastie Boys, 1960s pop singer Laura Nyro, the Small Faces (and their later Rod Stewart-led incarnation, the Faces), as well as mellow 1960s singer Donovan.
As far as I know, the other gay folks in the Hall of Fame are Elton John (1994), Dusty Springfield (1999) and Freddie Mercury (2001), who was inducted as a member of Queen. Check out the list of inductees and see if I've missed somebody. Acts become eligible 25 years after the release of their first U.S. full-length album.

VIDEO: Nyro was more famed for her many smash songs recorded by other artists. Here's her own take on her song made into a hit by the Fifth Dimension.

MICHIGAN: Backlash At Anti-Gay Mayor

Last week Mayor Janice Daniels of Troy, Michigan made national news when a six-month old anti-gay Facebook post surfaced. Now Daniels is facing the music at home.
She is getting a short, not too happy, education in the facts of political life — specifically that the kind of sweeping stereotypes that fringe groups applaud don't play well with the wider electorate, who may include the CEOs of major corporations or the local chamber of commerce. While Daniels says "I love all people," her Facebook post emitted the kind of "those people" vibe that created a barrage of Facebook jokes about Troy hairdressers and waiters exacting revenge on the mayor. "We don't regard this as statesmanlike or leadership," said Michele Hodges, president of the Troy Chamber of Commerce. "We've been deluged by emails and calls, but we want people to direct their anger, their justifiable anger, at city hall, not at local business." Maureen McGinnis, the mayor pro tem, said City Council members had received hundreds of emails, including those from people who said they wouldn't shop in Troy stores or eat in Troy restaurants.
Daniels says SHE is hearing from people who "want to move to Troy" because of her anti-gay attitude.

BELGIUM: Gay Prime Minister Sworn In

Elio Di Rupo, the openly gay head of Belgium's Socialist Party, took the oath of office yesterday before King Albert II. Di Rupo becomes the world's second openly gay head of government after Iceland's Johanna Sigurdardottir.
In a ceremony at the ornate royal palace, the son of Italian immigrants completed a remarkable personal journey that took him from an impoverished childhood in Belgium's rustbelt south to become the leader of Belgium. Amid small talk and jokes with King Albert II, the 13 ministers and 6 state secretaries took the oath, much to the relief of the nation of 6.5 million Dutch speakers and 4.5 million French speakers frustrated with lawmakers' inability to form a government over linguistic differences.
Di Rupo is Belgium's first French-speaking leader in 40 years. He has vowed to learn Dutch.

NYC Sees Wave Of iThieves

Thefts and robberies are soaring in NYC and the crooks are focusing on handheld electronics.
An eCrime wave is sweeping the city with iPads, smartphones and other pricey devices now more popular with Big Apple thieves than even cold hard cash, cops say. Half of the nearly 16,000 robberies in New York over the first 10 months of this year involved the trendy gadgets — mostly cell phones, an NYPD study found. “This makes electronics the single most stolen property type, surpassing even hard currency,” says the report. The thieves’ most wanted gadget is the iPhone, which accounts for over 70% of all stolen cell phones on subways and buses, the NYPD analysis reveals. Computers, tablets and MP3 players also account for nearly half the burglaries and 35% of all grand larcenies citywide, police said.
Cops say the number of thefts is higher than records show because some victims don't report muggings. The most common subway tactic is to reach in and snatch the device just as the doors are closing. (I witnessed this once.) The MTA advises keeping items in your pockets when standing near the doors.

SCOTLAND: Activists Call For Public Opinions On Same-Sex Marriage

Activists from Scotland's Equality Federation are soliciting public opinions on marriage equality. Submissions will be reviewed by the government.
Respondents do not have to be Scottish to express their opinion on the issue; the group can forward views from other countries in the UK and the world, which will then be looked at separately by the government. They say the decision taken by the government will have a important effect on how Scotland is perceived abroad, and overseas views should be taken into account. So far, the group has received around 15,000 messages through their website, but they are keen to boost the volume and diversity of responses in support of equal marriage rights.

NYT Reports On Clinton Speech

The New York Times reports on yesterday's historic move by the Obama administration, which is says was months in the planning.
Mrs. Clinton anticipated the sensitivity of the issue for some more conservative countries, saying that “the obstacles standing in the way of protecting the human rights” of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people “rest on deeply held personal, political, cultural and religious beliefs.” She argued that gay rights transcended national, political and even culture boundaries, casting them as universal rights like those adopted by 48 nations in the aftermath of World War II in what was called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Mrs. Clinton’s aides so worried about the reaction of some countries at the Human Rights Council that they did not advertise the theme of her remarks before she delivered them. In the end, no representatives from the council’s 47 member nations walked out, and the audience gave her a standing ovation.

Perkins: Obama Endorses Dog Fucking

"Believe me, I would like to talk about something else too. But the policies of the Obama administration have opened a Pandora's Box of perversion. Maybe the White House couldn't respond to the question, because it didn't have an answer. After all, the administration has already welcomed at least one offender into its ranks. Last Thursday, an official with the Centers for Disease Control was back at work, despite being charged with two counts of child molestation and bestiality.

"According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dr. Kimberly Lindsey, a deputy director with the CDC, has resumed her duties while she awaits trial. A police spokesman confirmed that 'During the investigation, evidence was recovered that led to the bestiality charge.' Unfortunately, this kind of abuse is more prevalent than people think. And this administration is not only ignoring it, but knowingly protecting employees who practice it. These are the consequences of a society where anything goes. Eventually, even the vilest cultural taboos are tolerated." - Family Research Council head and KKK affiliate Tony Perkins.

Reasons To Hate PETA, Part 89

Last week when the Senate approved the National Defense Authorization Act, included in that spending bill was an amendment overturning the military ban on sodomy. And since the ban on sodomy was in the same clause that banned fucking animals, the wingnuts are screaming that it's now legal to fuck goats in Obama's military. Yesterday when a reporter for the viciously anti-gay World Net Daily questioned White House press secretary Jay Carney about it, he rightfully laughed the asshat out of the room.

Enter PETA.
“In watching last night's news briefing, we were upset to note that you flippantly addressed the recently approved repeal of the military ban on bestiality,” the group wrote in the letter to Carney. “With respect, this is no laughing matter. Our office has been flooded with calls from Americans who are upset that this ban has been repealed—and for good reason. As we outlined in the attached letter sent yesterday to the secretary of defense, animal abuse does not affect animals only—it is also a matter of public safety, as people who abuse animals very often go on to abuse human beings.”
PETA is demanding that the ban on bestiality be reinstated and apparently they have little concern over whether that move would also reinstate the ban on sodomy. The ban on both remains in the House version of the bill, which is headed for reconciliation with the Senate's version. If PETA makes enough noise, there's a good chance that the sodomy ban will remain. But please don't let the rights of gay American soldiers get in the way of stopping the national epidemic of horse-fucking!

Matt Barber Is Ever So Pissed

Liberty Counsel's Matt Barber is in a positive tizzy over today's historic move by the Obama administration.
It is "frankly offensive," says the attorney, that President Obama "feels compelled to export American culture's decline in morality, and export that immorality to other nations that are trying to adhere to traditional principles relative to human sexuality." Barber also notes that the administration is apparently ignoring the fact that foreign nations -- like the United States -- are sovereign countries. He adds that the U.S. is "using essentially blackmail and the purse strings" of the nation to force countries to change their moral principles. "What about nations where Christians are driven out of the nation or executed?" he asks. "And this Obama administration, instead of focusing on real human rights abuses, is trying to force nations to adopt America's immoral positions on issues of sexuality."

Rick Perry Hates You An Extra Lot

"Just when you thought Barack Obama couldn’t get any more out of touch with America’s values, AP reports his administration wants to make foreign aid decisions based on gay rights. This administration’s war on traditional American values must stop. I have proposed a foreign aid budget that starts at zero. From that zero baseline, we will consider aid requests based solely on America’s national security interests. Promoting special rights for gays in foreign countries is not in America’s interests and not worth a dime of taxpayers’ money.

"But there is a troubling trend here beyond the national security nonsense inherent in this silly idea. This is just the most recent example of an administration at war with people of faith in this country. Investing tax dollars promoting a lifestyle many Americas of faith find so deeply objectionable is wrong. President Obama has again mistaken America’s tolerance for different lifestyles with an endorsement of those lifestyles. I will not make that mistake." - Rick Perry.

The enemies of LGBT equality use small children as props in their misleading commercials and at their hate rallies all the time. It's a credit to our side that this sort of thing—a gay parent pushing a child into the face of a hater like Bachmann—is so rare that this video shocks the conscience." - Dan Savage, reaction to yesterday's viral clip of a small child telling Crazy Eyes, "My mommy is gay and she doesn't need to be fixed.

Macy's Stands Up For Trans Rights

Macy's recently made the right call concerning a employee complaint about a transgender patron. And that has them on the hit list of hate groups like the Liberty Counsel who allege that the employee was fired because of her "sincerely held religious objection" to transwomen using the ladies changing room.
Johnson pointed out to management the consequences of the policy and the potential danger to women and offensiveness of the policy, as well as that it violated her religious beliefs. She was fired. Natalie's situation represents what we're going to see around the country if we have this LBGT agenda continue to advance. It literally has become the theatre of the absurd," Staver offers. "This policy at Macy's is fraught with problems -- it will alienate and offend the majority of their customers, particularly women," he continues. "They obviously do not, nor should they have to put up with, men using the women's fitting rooms."
The American Family Association's Bryan Fischer rushes in to declare the incident "Homosexual Bigots Commit Hates Crimes, Part 14."
This action on Macy’s part was clearly motivated by its prejudicial bias against this woman and her religious convictions. To be told you will lose your job unless you violate your conscience is both a threat and harassment. Well, you can’t be any more annoyed, threatened, intimidated or alarmed than to be told your job depends upon ditching everything you know to be true about gender and freedom. And talk about a hostile environment! Macy’s is now so hostile to Natalie Johnson that she can’t even go to work there anymore.
And of course, here's today's AFA poll of the day.

LIVE VIDEO: Sec. Hillary Clinton To Give 12pm Speech at Human Rights Day

Speaking live at 12pm EST from Geneva's International Human Rights Day, Sec. Clinton will address the LGBT rights memo in the post below.

UPDATE: Clinton's speech has concluded and if you watched it, you'll agree that it was simply fantastic. Two notable items: Clinton opened by acknowledging that the United States itself is far from perfect when it comes to LGBT rights. Also, and quite noticeably, there was no mention of same-sex marriage. That, however, is probably a relatively trifling issue when dealing with nations with a gay death penalty. Our hats are off to Sec. Clinton. Clip to follow as soon as possible.

President Obama Issues Agency Directive To Promote International LGBT Rights

President Obama today issued an unprecedented directive that federal agencies should work to promote and protect LGBT rights in foreign countries. The Human Rights Campaign reacts:
The presidential memorandum is the first ever U.S. government strategy to deal with human rights abuses against LGBT people abroad. It directs all government agencies that engage in foreign affairs to promote LGBT human rights globally – including decriminalization of LGBT people and humane treatment of LGBT refugees and those seeking asylum, among other things. “As Americans, we understand that no one should be made a criminal or subject to violence or even death because of who they are, no matter where they live,” said Solmonese. “Today’s actions by President Obama make clear that the United States will not turn a blind eye when governments commit or allow abuses to the human rights of LGBT people.”
Chris Geidner examines the memo at Metro Weekly:
Obama's memorandum requires the Department of State to "lead a standing group, with appropriate interagency representation, to help ensure the Federal Government's swift and meaningful response to serious incidents that threaten the human rights of LGBT persons abroad." Another portion of the memorandum directs "agencies engaged abroad" to "strengthen the work they have begun and initiate additional efforts" to combat LGBT discrimination and strengthen international policies and programming on LGBT issues.

Orthodox Rabbis Denounce Gay Weddings

Over 100 Orthodox rabbis have signed a public denunciation of any rabbi that dares solemnize a gay union.
Some of the most prominent rabbinic figures in the Orthodox Jewish world, including Rabbi Hershel Schachter and Rabbi Hershel Reichman of Yeshiva University and Rabbi Elie Abadie of the Safra Synagogue – issued a statement declaring that, “By definition, a union that is not sanctioned by Torah law is not an Orthodox wedding, and by definition a person who conducts such a ceremony is not an Orthodox rabbi.”
Although all of the rabbis put their names to the above-linked document, one didn't want his name associated with his comment to a reporter.
“There is no such thing as a Jew who does not have spiritual struggles and challenges. We accept Jews who do not fully observe the Sabbath and do not keep kosher, and we accept those who struggle with sexual issues. However, just as we cannot accept someone who promotes desecration of the Sabbath and abandoning the laws of kashrut (kosher), or actively advocates adultery, we cannot accept someone who actively and publicly, promotes the practice of homosexuality.”
An interesting bit of Torah law appears in the article's comments.
I would like to correct: the Torah does not demand death penalty for gays. The Torah applies the death penalty to someone who willfully engaged in male to male penetration, before witnesses and after being warned. And the judges had the duty to try and find any flaw possible in the witnesses’ account so as not to put to death a human being, even though it would appear quite clear that he had done it. Bottom line: only the act can bring that punishment, not any kind of urge, or feeling, or opinion. Therefore, someone thing of himself as ‘gay’ shouldn’t feel any guilt, for he has not chosen that situation. His duty, however, is to fight and overcome this inclination, just like we all have to fight all our evil inclinations. Even if it means struggling all his life.

RANKED: Healthiest States

Insurance giant United Healthcare has ranked the "healthiest states" according to factors like diet, exercise, smoking, obesity, etc.
For the fifth year in a row, Vermont is the nation’s healthiest state. States that showed the most substantial improvement include New York and New Jersey, both moving up six places, largely because of improvements made in smoking cessation. Idaho and Alaska showed the most downward movement. Idaho dropped 10 spots, from number nine to 19 in this year’s Rankings, and Alaska dropped five places. Mississippi is 50th and the least healthy state, while Louisiana is 49th. Oklahoma, Arkansas and Alabama complete the bottom five states.
According to United Healthcare, 17.3% of adults are smokers, an all-time low. Twenty years ago that number was almost 30%. (Via -Igor Volsky)

Judy Garland's ruby slippers go up for auction later this month in California.
The slippers are one of only four pairs remaining from the classic film. One pair is on display at the Smithsonian, another is already part of a private collection, and the third was actually stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minn. The shoes are expected to cost between $2 and $3 million, which is an accurate price according to Rhys Thomas, author of 'The Ruby Slippers of Oz.' "They are the holy grail of Hollywood memorabilia," Thomas told Entertainment Tonight. "They are the 'take me home to Kansas,' shoes, transcending Hollywood, representing an enduring symbol of the power of belief."

Hate Groups Furious With Johnny Depp

Right Wing Watch tips us that hate groups are furious with Johnny Depp for recording a song which is a "slap in the face of Christians" all over the world.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star teamed up with British rockers Babybird to record The Jesus Stag Night Club, which tells a story of a boozing Christ-like figure in a strip club. But the track has caused uproar amongst religious groups including the Focus on Family campaign. "We are sickened by Mr Depp's behaviour. Why did he need to record this song? It is a slap in the face to Christians all over the world," a spokesperson says. "I'm sure he thinks he's being very funny but he's simply a disgrace. One day, Johnny Depp and his cronies will face the judgment of our Lord and they will burn in hell for this filth," Lee Douglas, of The Christian Coalition, adds.

I ask for your support, and I ask for your help in making Washington less consequential in our lives." - Rick Perry, in an open letter to former Herman Cain supporters.

Pelosi: I've Got Dirt On Newt

Yesterday House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi warned that she has damaging information about Newt Gingrich that she will reveal some time in the future.
“One of these days we’ll have a conversation about Newt Gingrich,” Pelosi told Talking Points Memo. “When the time is right. … I know a lot about him. I served on the investigative committee that investigated him, four of us locked in a room in an undisclosed location for a year. A thousand pages of his stuff." Gingrich, who served as Speaker of the House, worked with Pelosi in Congress from 1987 to 1999. Pelosi also served on the ethics committee that investigated Gingrich for tax cheating and campaign finance violations in the late ’90s.
Gingrich warned Pelosi that she would be "abusing the ethics process" if she disclosed the details of his investigation.

Iowa Hate Group Endorses Gingrich

"He is articulating a very Christian-historical worldview. People are seeing he’s had a life transformation. The second thing he’s got going for him is some people believe Newt is the best prepared to lead. And three is that he looks like the one with the best shot at being the alternative to Romney and defeating Romney. Believe me, conservatives want an alternative to Romney. They don’t trust him." - Iowa Family Leader head Bob Vander Plaats, who says "rock-solid Christians" want Gingrich. (Via - Igor Volsky)

The $800,000 Parking Space

Apartments in a new Manhattan high-rise come with what are arguably the world's most expensive parking spots. Because the building has a dedicated car elevator that transports your vehicle up to an enclosed space outside your front door. An equivalent amount of floor space in that building would sell for about $800,000. Hit the link for more and for a video demo of the elevator. BTW, Martha Stewart enjoys a similar parking situation at the converted warehouse now serving as her corporate office.

BUFFALO: School Suspends Students Who Bullied Suicide Victim Jamie Rodemeyer

The Buffalo News reports that the students who literally bullied Jamie Rodemeyer to death are getting off light.

"[The police] shared some information with us, and we followed up," Superintendent Scott Martzloff said. "We made the determination to take disciplinary action." He declined to say how many students were suspended. Though based on Amherst police findings, it's likely that several of Jamey's classmates were sanctioned. Regarding the severity of punishments these students received, Martzloff said only that the students face "a minimum of suspensions." That implies at least short-term suspensions of up to five days, with the possibility of long-term suspensions subject to a hearing. Expulsion is not an option for students of this age.
Buffalo police announced in October that there would be no criminal charges against the students.

PUERTO RICO: Lawmakers Attempt To Exclude LGBT From Hate Crimes Law

Michael Lavers reports that Puerto Rico's legislature is set to exclude LGBT residents in a revision of the island's hate crimes law.
The Puerto Rico Senate late last month approved a provision that would eliminate sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, ethnicity and religious beliefs from the hate crimes statute that was included in the penal code that lawmakers approved in 2004. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the amended penal code this week during an extraordinary legislative session that Gov. Luis Fortuño convened. Representative Héctor Ferrer and Sen. Eduardo Bhatia joined LGBT and Dominican activists at a press conference on Sunday, Dec. 4, to criticize the proposed amendments. "To eliminate these groups as protected categories is to invite the commission of hate crimes in Puerto Rico," said Ferrer, as Vocero reported on Dec. 4 "It is a setback in the country’s public policy."
This move is especially outrageous considering that Puerto Rico has seen several of America's most heinous anti-LGBT murders in the last several years.
