Buzzfeed Scoops Dead Breitbart

As we learned over the weekend, President Obama had Andrew Breitbart murdered because he was about to publish a "devastating" video from the president's college days. Today Buzzfeed beat the Breitbart sites to the punch by publishing the below 1991 clip in which the future president argues in support for Harvard Professor Derrick Bell's plea for campus diversity.
Obama was a major figure on campus, the first black president of the Law Review. Some friends, in a prescient joke, just referred to him as "the first black president." He had a reputation as a conciliatory figure, not a confrontational one like Bell. ""How Obama would react to Derrick Bell's protest was a matter of some interest," New Yorker editor David Remnick wrote in his exploration of Obama and race, The Bridge. It was a situation in which clear lines had been drawn, and Obama sided with Bell. In a speech before the law school's Harkness Commons — and sounding very much like his future presidential self — he described Bell as "the Rosa Parks of legal education."
Breitbart.com claims the video "has been selectively edited--either by the Boston television station or by Buzzfeed itself." Buzzfeed says this is the whole thing.

Space Weather Alert!

NOAA warns that a solar storm could fuck things up starting tonight.
The CME that erupted late on March 4 passed ACE around 0400 UTC March 7 (11:00 p.m. EST March 6). As a result, storming reaching the G2 (Moderate) level continues at this time. Another CME, part of the recent R3 (Strong) Radio Blackout event at 0024 UTC March 7 (7:24 p.m. EST March 6) is forecast to pass ACE early morning UTC on March 8 (start of day EST March 8) . Geomagnetic storm periods reaching the G3 (Strong) level are likely from that CME. Finally, a Solar Radiation Storm is also in progress and levels are currently above the S3 (Strong) threshold. Region 1429 remains potent and subsequent activity is certainly possible. Updates here as conditions warrant.
Gothamist has the video.

Four-In-One HIV Med News

Gilead has announced the results of Stage 3 clinical trials of "the Quad," which would be the world's first four-in-one daily HIV pill. The Quad contains two new (and not yet FDA approved) drugs: the integrase inhibitor, Elvitegravir, and Cobicistat, which is meant to mitigate the side-effects of Elvitegravir.

Via press release:
“These data show that the Quad is as effective [as Atripla] as a current standard of care in HIV therapy. The safety profile of Quad was also comparable to that of Atripla, and was better tolerated in terms of key neurological side effects,” said Paul Sax, MD, Clinical Director of the HIV Program and Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, and principal investigator of Study 102. “Based on these results, I believe the Quad could represent a potentially important new treatment regimen for a wide range of HIV patients initiating therapy.”
Gilead also produces Atripla. Both Atripla and the Quad contain Truvada, which is under consideration as a daily pre-exposure prophylactic (PReP) for the uninfected.

Reuters has more:
The safety data, presented here on Wednesday at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, showed that patients on Atripla had significantly higher rates of dizziness, abnormal dreams, insomnia and rash, compared with the Quad. The experimental pill did result in higher rates of nausea, 21 percent vs 14 percent. The study found that at 48 weeks of treatment, 88 percent of Quad patients, compared with 84 percent of Atripla patients, achieved target levels of HIV virus.
As millions of patients are well into their second decade of daily HIV therapy, we'll see more of this focus on refining the treatments to reduce their immediate and long-term side-effects.

Promising New Poll For Maine

Public Policy Polling reports on their just-released results:
It looks like Maine voters will reverse their 2009 decision and legalize gay marriage in the state this fall. 54% think that gay marriage should be legal to only 41% who think it should be illegal. And when we asked about the issue using the exact language voters will see on the ballot this fall, they say they're inclined to support the referendum by a 47-32 margin.

HAWAII: Alliance Defense Fund Demands Standing To Defend Civil Unions Law

Last month Hawaii Gov. Neal Abercrombie announced that he would not defend the state against a lawsuit claiming that the existing civil unions law unconstitutionally deprives residents of the right to same-sex marriage.

Today the Alliance Defense Fund announced that they have petitioned for standing to intervene. Unless I'm reading the linked news item wrong, this may be the first time an anti-gay hate group has moved to defend an ostensibly pro-gay law.
Attorney Holly Carmichael explains the lawsuit was filed by three individuals attacking Hawaii's civil unions law, arguing that it is not satisfactory. The plaintiffs say only a complete redefinition of marriage will please them. "Society should protect and strengthen marriage, not undermine it as this lawsuit clearly seeks to do," Carmichael contends. "Anyone who believes that civil unions will preserve marriage need only look at this lawsuit and countless others. Civil unions are a Trojan horse used by activists to undermine marriage, not protect it. Hawaii's marriage statute and constitutional amendment uphold marriage, and we are seeking to give those protections an adequate defense."
Abercrombie signed Hawaii's civil unions bill in February 2011.

HomoQuotable - Jimmy LaSalvia

"Despite the large delegate lead enjoyed by Governor Romney, other candidates in the field have made it clear that they intend to continue on. The question that Republicans, and conservatives in particular, must begin to ask themselves is whether continuing this process is in the best interest of our movement, the party and – most importantly – our country.

"President Obama has made it clear that he plans on doubling down on his failed policies. Obama and the left are fanning the flames of the culture wars in an attempt to distract Americans from the abject failure of this President to create jobs and grow our economy. To focus on the issues that Americans most care about and to defeat Obama we will need unity in the conservative movement and in the Republican Party and that unity must come soon." - GOProud president Jimmy LaSalvia, calling on everybody but Romney to drop out.

NYC Cops Investigate Infant Herpes Death After Jewish Circumcision Ritual

The Brooklyn District Attorney's office is investigating the death of a two week-old boy who contracted herpes during a creepy Ultra Orthodox Jewish circumcision ritual in which the rabbi sucks the blood from the baby's penis.
The cause of death was listed as “disseminated herpes simplex virus Type 1, complicating ritual circumcision with oral suction.” Mayor Bloomberg Tuesday defended that finding. “The doctors who found this are objective and independent scientists who don’t answer to anyone, including whoever is Mayor,” he told reporters at an unrelated event in The Bronx. “One more point: There’s probably nobody in public life who fights harder for the separation of church and state than me. But religious liberty simply does not extend to injuring others or putting children at risk," Bloomberg continued.
The NYC Department of Health has a fact sheet denouncing the practice.
In metzitzah b'peh, the mohel places his mouth on the freshly circumcised penis to draw blood away from the cut. If the mohel is infected with oral herpes (as most adults are), metzitzah b'peh can expose the infant to the herpes virus. While severe illness associated with this practice may be rare , there is a definite risk of infection.
Even though there is an investigation underway, charges are unlikely as the ritual is not yet against city or state health laws. That may soon change.

OHIO: Joe The Plumber Wins Primary

There's a slight chance that Joe The Plumber will become a member of Congress. SRSLY.
An Ohio plumber thrust into national politics during the 2008 presidential campaign has won the Republican nomination in his home state as he makes a bid for Congress. Samuel Wurzelbacher gained the nickname "Joe the Plumber" for expressing working-class concerns about taxes to then-candidate Barack Obama during a stop to the region. The Toledo-area plumber defeated Steve Kraus, a Sandusky real estate agent, early Wednesday to grab the GOP nomination in Ohio's 9th Congressional District.
Wurzelbacher will face 14-term Democrat Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who must battle into a newly-drawn district.

Now being served in Brooklyn.
“People really like it even though it’s named after something gross — both the person and the Dan Savage meaning,” said John Rauschenberg, co-owner of Pacific Standard. “It’ll be an election fixture at least until primary season is over.” The duo behind the beer hole near St. Mark’s Place often put out cocktails with suggestive names, such as the Corn Holed Fashioned or Mike Gallego’s Cup. But the Santorum, a milky mixture of Baileys, orange vodka, bitters and chocolate flakes, seems to be sticking. We won’t explain how the drink matches up with an alternate definition of the word “Santorum,” as The Brooklyn Paper is a family publication — but the bar’s liberal proprietors are certain it’ll satisfy any boozy desires.

No Homophobia In The Animal Kingdom

From Animals And Homophobia on Slate:
Homosexual behavior has been documented in hundreds of animal species, but the same does not hold for gay-bashing. For starters, few animals are exclusively gay. Two female Japanese macaques might have playful sex with each other on Tuesday, then mate with males on Wednesday. Pairs of male elephants sometimes form years-long companionships that include sexual activity, while their heterosexual couplings tend to be one-night stands. For these and many other species, sexual preferences seem to be fluid rather than binary: Gay sex doesn’t make them gay, and straight sex doesn’t make them straight. In these cases, the concept of homophobia simply doesn’t apply.

Kirk Cameron: I'm Being Oppressed!

"I believe that freedom of speech and freedom of religion go hand-in-hand in America. I should be able to express moral views on social issues – especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years – without being slandered, accused of hate speech and told from those who preach ‘tolerance’ that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square. In any society that is governed by the rule of law, some form of morality is always imposed. It’s inescapable." - Kirk Cameron, quoted by World Net Daily. Cameron adds that he's gotten support from "my gay friends" since the CNN interview aired.

NOTE: To my knowledge, not one person or organization has asked the government to silence Kirk Cameron. His freedom of speech and his freedom to be a batshit crazy fuckweasel has never been threatened.

HomoQuotable - Michael Lucas

"While the thought-police replace our language with words that advance their political aims, they've also mastered the misappropriation of others. Take the word 'racist.' It's about the worst thing one can be called in our society. And it's now being applied to those brave enough to speak out against Islamic fundamentalists. Pointing out the obvious — that mainstream Muslim thought is homophobic, and homicidal toward non-believers — is one of the quickest ways I know of to get slapped with the racist label. Never mind the fact that Islam is a religion, not a race. Interestingly, if you criticize Christianity, the worst thing you'll be called is a 'liberal.'" - Porn producer Michael Lucas, writing for the Advocate.

NOTE: It's worth reading the full column just to see how many paragraphs on English lexicology it takes Lucas to get to what is essentially a defense of his rabid Zionism.

Sen. Mike Johanns Named "Gun Saint"

The St. Gabriel Possenti Society has named GOP Sen. Mike Johanns (NE) as its "gun saint" of self-defense for his work to thwart gun control laws. In other news, there is a Patron Saint of Handgunners. Or will be, rather, if the Vatican approves the request of the Society.
The Society's patron, St. Gabriel Possenti, a seminarian, rescued villagers of Isola del Gran Sasso, Italy in 1860 from renegade marauders. By shooting a lizard running across the road, he demonstrated his handgun marksmanship to the terrorists and marched them out of town. He did this without causing physical harm to a single human being. St. Gabriel Possenti was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920. The Society seeks his Vatican designation as Patron of Handgunners.

Swag Tuesday

Courtesy of the Karpel Group, today's Swag Tuesday prize is Love At The Bottom Of The Sea, the tenth studio album from cult favorites Magnetic Fields. The release is available beginning today at Amazon, iTunes, and at retailers nationwide.
There is no official theme for The Magnetic Fields’ tenth full-length release, Love at the Bottom of the Sea, but Merritt describes it as a return to their roots (synths!). In it, he challenged himself to use synthesizers in different ways. “Our no-synth trilogy being over, we are now gleefully using synthesizers in ever more improbable ways, often sounding like electronic swarms of crickets and that sort of thing. What I wanted to do with the synthesizers was bring in chance and indeterminacy, not necessarily in a Cage-ian way where you allow anything that happens to happen, but I wanted to let the more unusual synthesizers and electronic instruments make their strange sounds and then I would edit and pick and choose between different parts that they made,” he says.
We have three CD copies of Love At The Bottom Of The Sea to give away. Enter to win by commenting on this post. Only enter once and please remember to leave your email address in the text of your comment. Entries close at midnight on Thursday, west coast time. Publicists: If you'd like to take part in Swag Tuesday on JMG, please email me.

Delaware Gov: Gay Marriage Is Inevitable

As same-sex marriage springs up all around him, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell says that it will come soon to his state too.
In an interview with Reuters Insider TV, Markell, a Democrat, said he expects that Delaware will take up same-sex marriage legislation "probably within the next few years." Delaware began allowing civil unions -- an institution set up to give the same rights as civil marriage, while reserving marriage for heterosexual couples -- last year. Markell noted that until three years ago it was legal in Delaware "to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation," and said the state was moving towards greater acceptance of homosexuality. "I think it's inevitable," he said of gay marriage.

Sheriff Paul Babeu Sued By Ex-BF

Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu has been sued for $1 million by his former boyfriend, Jose Orozco. The claims contained in the lawsuit have not yet been disclosed.
Tim Gaffney, Sheriff's Office director of communications and grants, issued this statement in response to a request for comment: "A notice of claim was provided to our office earlier today regarding this matter. As with any pending civil litigation, it would be inappropriate to comment at this time." The claim creates new complexities for Babeu, who is completing his first term as sheriff and is running for a congressional seat in central Arizona. Babeu's relationship with Orozco surfaced Feb.17 when the Phoenix New Times alleged the sheriff and his attorney, Chris DeRose, had threatened that the former boyfriend, who is Mexican, could be deported if he revealed the relationship.
Both GOProud and the Log Cabin Republicans have reportedly discussed working with Babeu's congressional campaign, which is still active at this writing.

Gary Bauer On Kirk Cameron

"The left went nuts. Homosexual rights groups blasted Cameron's alleged bigotry and intolerance. Liberal Hollywood types rushed to Tweet their condemnation of Cameron's values and to reaffirm their fidelity to the gay marriage cause. Not long ago, virtually no one would have argued with Cameron's comments. But the cultural left is determined to impose its values on the rest of society. It began by purging faith from the public square and forcing it into the closet. Then abortion was forced on every state in the country. Now marriage is being redefined. The secularists want an America where traditional values cannot be spoken. As the Democrat Party embraced the radical left, more and more values voters found a home in the Republican Party. They expect the GOP to unapologetically defend their cherished values. Increasingly, however, it seems only one party is committed to fighting and winning the culture war." - Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer, via Right Wing Watch.

RELATED: In the 80's Bauer was Reagan's Chief Domestic Policy Adviser. Then he was the president of the Family Research Council from 1988 to 1999 during the period shortly after it spun off from Focus On The Family, where he was vice president. Today he is the president of the anti-gay hate group, American Values. In 2010 he was one of the first prominent signers of the Manhattan Declaration, which calls on Christians to disobey laws that protect LGBT Americans from discrimination.

REPORT: 40 Gays Killed In Iraq

Via press alert from the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Campaign:
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission has today received reports from Iraq of a wave of targeted killings of individuals who are perceived to be gay or lesbian. According to Iraqi human rights activists, in early February 2012, an unidentified group posted death threats against "the adulterous individuals" in the pre-dominantly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad and Basra. The threats gave the individuals, whose names and ages were listed, four days to stop their behavior or else face the wrath of God, and were to be carried out by the Mujahedin. According to sources inside Iraq, as the result of this new surge of anti-gay violence close to 40 people have been kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered. The Iraqi authorities have neither responded to this targeted violence nor have they publically denounced it. It is widely believed that these atrocities are being committed by a group of the Shiite militia.
IGLHRC has called on the Iraqi government to denounce the killings and take immediate steps to protect the nation's LGBT people.

NEW YORK CITY: Police Seek Prostitute In Strangulation Murder Of Chelsea Gay Man

On Friday night Manhattan resident John Laubach, 57, was found bound, gagged, and apparently strangled to death in his Chelsea apartment. Police are seeking a young man that Laubach may have hired that evening on Rentboy.com.
Police late Monday released a set of surveillance photos of a man allegedly caught trying to using John Laubach's bank card after he died, police said. The photos are from an ATM machine camera. Earlier Monday, police questioned a 24-year-old man but released him after interviewing him. Law-enforcement sources told NBC New York that they were led to the man after using facial recognition software on a still photo taken from a surveillance camera. The search turned up a possible hit -- an old mugshot for the 24-year-old man. John Laubach was found unconscious in his fourth-floor apartment at 212 West 22nd St. in Chelsea just before 8 p.m. Friday, when a friend went to check on him, according to police. His arms were found bound to the bedpost by an electrical cord, his mouth gagged with tape and his face covered with a towel, authorities said.
Friends say Laubach was active in a local gay-affirming church and had been studying to become a pastor. Neighbors report that Laubach lived quietly and occasionally had young male visitors. Below are the ATM surveillance shots released by the NYPD.RELATED: Late last year Craigslist prostitute John Katehis was found guilty for the gruesome 2009 stabbing murder of CBS newsman George Weber. Several other high-profile murders related to internet prostitution have rocked New York City in recent years.

NEW YORK: Empire State Pride Agenda Fires Executive Director Ross Levi

The Empire State Pride Agenda has let go its executive director, Ross Levi. Paul Schindler reports at Gay City News:
Barely eight months after New York State’s gay rights movement won its biggest victory ever, with the enactment of marriage equality, the Empire State Pride Agenda, the state’s LGBT lobby, has fired its executive director, Ross Levi. The action came in a March 5 conference call with members of the boards of the organization’s two arms –– the Empire State Pride Agenda, Inc., its lobbying and political action component, and the Empire State Pride Agenda Foundation, Inc., which does educational, organizing, and advocacy work on behalf of the LGBT community.

The two boards, which have some overlap, include nearly three-dozen members. According to two board members who deliberated on the call but wished to remain anonymous, the decision was broadly embraced by those participating on March 5. In a call with Gay City News, the group’s two board leaders –– Louis A. Bradbury and Marla Hassner –– confirmed Levi’s departure. He “will be stepping down” effective April 6, said Hassner, a co-chair of ESPA’s foundation and vice chair of the lobbying and political action arm. Asked how the phrase “stepping down” squared with the boards’ decision to terminate Levi’s employment, Hassner said, “The Pride Agenda does not comment on personnel matters.”
This morning the Pride Agenda released this statement:
“We greatly appreciate Ross's twelve years with the organization. He has been part of the Pride Agenda's major legislative victories, culminating in the momentous marriage win last year,” said Louis Bradbury, co-chair of the Empire State Pride Agenda Foundation and chair of the Empire State Pride Agenda. “We wish Ross the very best in his future endeavors."
Ross declined to speak to Gay City News. Read their full report.

Quote Of The Day - Peter Sprigg

"An important statistic that I read once was that there’s a survey done of 12 year-olds that found at age 12, 25 percent of the students were unsure of their sexual orientation. But we know from surveys of the adult population that only maybe 2 to 3 percent of the adult population will actually identify as homosexual or bisexual. So you have this population of young people that left to themselves, 9 out of 10 would end up being perfectly heterosexual, but now with the politically correct environment in the schools, those kids are being told by their teachers and guidance counselors, 'well you are probably gay, you were born that way, you just have to accept it and embrace it.'" - Family Research Council "senior fellow" Peter Sprigg, who wants public schools to distribute "ex-gay" information.
