NORTH CAROLINA: Man Films Himself Firing A Shotgun Into Neighbor's Yard Sign Against Amendment One
How is NOM going to spin THIS? Somebody please mirror this clip immediately onto your own YouTube channel and send me a back-up link.
UPDATE: Thanks folks, we've now got back-up copies of this shameless assholery. I'm saving your links in case NOM talks this guy into pulling his own clip. In the meantime, please do NOT flag him on YouTube. Let this go viral. UPDATE II: I have spoken to the Kannopolis, North Carolina police department and they are looking into what will be classified a crime if the shotgun was fired onto property that includes a home or business. Kannopolis is 20 minutes outside of Charlotte, so let's also get this on the radar of local media.UPDATE III: As we expected, the clip's maker has pulled it from YouTube. I've replaced the clip with one of the many mirrored copies you folks have made. Thanks!
NORTH CAROLINA: Local Police Deny Story About Woman "Beaten" Over Yard Sign
Following up on the claim that an elderly North Carolina woman was "violently beaten" over her anti-gay marriage yard sign, I just spoke to Chief Detective Howard Branch of the Robeson County Sheriff's Office.
Guess what? The story was a lie.
According to Detective Branch, the woman in question was not in her own yard, as was implied by Vote For Marriage NC, she was at another house "looking for her sister." Branch told me that there the woman may have argued with a man about a yard sign, but Branch didn't know where that sign may have been located or for which side of the marriage issue it advocated. It's possible that she was complaining about the other man's own yard sign. There may have been no yard sign at all.
Robeson County officers advised the woman that if she wanted to pursue charges about having her car door slammed on her as she left the man's house, she could file for a misdemeanor charge of simple battery. Branch said no such claim was yet on record.
Does anybody want to take odds that Vote For Marriage NC confesses to their numerous outrageous lies about this concocted event? How many can you see below?
UPDATE: After I tweeted out my proof that they had lied, Vote For Marriage NC promptly blocked me. Liars AND chickenshit. UPDATE II: NOM is continuing to tweet out links to Maggie Gallagher's blog post about this disproved lie. UPDATE III: Vote For Marriage NC has issued a "correction" but not an apology for any of the lies in their earlier tweets.
Civil unions advance in Colorado, but old foes are joining forces in Maine. There's just a few days left until North Carolina votes on an extreme constitutional amendment, and the race is getting closer and closer every day. And new research has shown a promising trend when it comes to public opinion.
"Like the classic case of the bully who picks on people because he's afraid, deep down, that he is the one who actually is weak, it appears that these guys beat up others in the community to divert attention from themselves and to show that they're down with everyone else who's doing the bashing. In the case of [Richard] Grenell, it's particularly interesting because if you watch a video of him being interviewed you'll see he is not exactly the standard of masculinity. And that's totally fine -- few men are, gay or straight. But for him to then criticize a lesbian for not meeting a standard of femininity does reveal a certain 'lady doth protest too much' quality.
"We've seen similar kinds of tweets about Maddow from Chris Barron, one of the founders of the conservative gay group, GOProud, who once mocked her for looking like a 'dude.' He's also tweeted that Barney Frank is 'catty,' has a 'purse' and wants to 'sit in Scott Brown's lap.' Curiously, Barron also obsessively tweets about his gym workouts and tweets many photos of his worked-out abs, in what seems like a desperate exercise in overcompensation, as if to say, 'See, I really am a real man, really!'" - Michelangelo Signorile, writing for Huffington Post.
You may recall that last year Donohue blew a fuse because the Empire State refused his demand to light the building for Mother Teresa. According to an unnamed source in today's New York Post, tonight 1WTC will be lit in her colors at a dig at the ESB, which it officially eclipsed in height today.
NORTH CAROLINA: Hate Group Claims Assault Over Anti-Gay Marriage Sign
With exactly one week to go before the vote, North Carolina's anti-gay marriage group is claiming that an elderly woman was "violently beaten" because of her yard sign. Older. Woman. On her way home from church. No report can yet be found online. Note how Pastor Down Low has already spun the story.
Breitbart.com Devotes Entire Front Page To Attacks On Dan Savage
Wingnuts sites nationwide are piling on Dan Savage today, none more so than Breitbart.com, which at this writing has devoted the top seven stories on its front page to attacks on Savage from several directions.
"What immediately became a meme amongst those criticizing Dan is that those who walked out of his talk felt bullied by him. But that’s impossible. People get bullied because of who they are: how they look and act, what they say and do. Perceived as being in some critical way weak or lacking, victims of bullies are selected for persecution; they are pulled from the pack before being pointedly and repeatedly victimized. The people who walked out during Dan’s talk were not separated from their peers by anyone. They were content to do that themselves. They were not frightened or cowed. They were offended. They felt that by disparaging what amounts to their God, Dan had transgressed beyond their capacity for toleration. And they were pleased to show their intolerance of Dan’s words by protesting against them in the manner they did. Theirs was not an act born of suffering. It was a proud show of disdain." - Christian author John Shore.
Today at 2:30pm I'll be on Michelangelo Signorile's SiriusXM show to talk about some of the latest LGBT-related news items. The gays are on channel 108 and you can listen live online if you sign up for a freebie account. What would be your top five gay news stories this week?
Breitbarters Protest His "Assassination" Outside White House Press Dinner
On Saturday followers of Andrew Breitbart protested outside the White House Correspondents Dinner, demanding that President Obama be exposed as his murderer. Or something. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the protesters also hurled abuse at dinner attendee Woody Harrelson over his marijuana use. That's kinda funny, considering Breitbart's famed history with drugs.
North Carolina already has a law barring same-sex marriage, but the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature is not satisfied. It devised a measure to enshrine this obvious discrimination in the State Constitution and placed it on the ballot of the state’s May 8 primary election — a test of tolerance versus bigotry that ought to be watched closely nationwide. [snip] Opponents of marriage equality have never been able to show any evidence that any harm is caused to heterosexual marriages by granting all American adults the right to marry as they choose — because there is no such evidence. With little more than a week to go before the May 8 contest, and early voting already under way, North Carolinians need to consider whether they really want to inflict this gratuitous bigotry on their fellow citizens and their children.
The milestone is a preliminary one. Workers are still adding floors to the so-called "Freedom Tower" and it isn't expected to reach its full height for at least another year, at which point it is likely to be declared the tallest building in the U.S., and third tallest in the world. Those bragging rights, though, will carry an asterisk. Crowning the world's tallest buildings is a little like picking the heavyweight champion in boxing. There is often disagreement about who deserves the belt. In this case, the issue involves the 408-foot-tall needle that will sit on the tower's roof. Count it, and the World Trade Center is back on top. Otherwise, it will have to settle for No. 2, after the Willis Tower in Chicago.
Many have commented that when viewed from outside Manhattan, 1WTC looks nowhere near as tall as the Empire State.
This weekend the New York Times published news of yet another study which demonstrates that those who most strongly identify as heterosexual often have secret homosexual desires.
Participants rated their sexual orientation on a 10-point scale, ranging from gay to straight. Then they took a computer-administered test designed to measure their implicit sexual orientation. In the test, the participants were shown images and words indicative of hetero- and homosexuality (pictures of same-sex and straight couples, words like “homosexual” and “gay”) and were asked to sort them into the appropriate category, gay or straight, as quickly as possible. The computer measured their reaction times. The twist was that before each word and image appeared, the word “me” or “other” was flashed on the screen for 35 milliseconds — long enough for participants to subliminally process the word but short enough that they could not consciously see it. The theory here, known as semantic association, is that when “me” precedes words or images that reflect your sexual orientation (for example, heterosexual images for a straight person), you will sort these images into the correct category faster than when “me” precedes words or images that are incongruent with your sexual orientation (for example, homosexual images for a straight person). This technique, adapted from similar tests used to assess attitudes like subconscious racial bias, reliably distinguishes between self-identified straight individuals and those who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual.
Over 20% of self-described "highly straight" participants answered in the fashion that self-described gay people did. It was noted that these participants also favored the most strongly anti-gay social policies.
"I believe the Scripture says that being gay is a sin. But, you know, every time I say that, Chris, I get people say, ‘Well, you are a gay hater and you’re a gay basher.’ I’m not. I don’t dislike anybody. Gays are some of the nicest, kindest, most loving people in the world. But my faith is based on what I believe the Scripture says and that’s the way I read the Scripture. I think we shouldn’t discriminate against anybody. So, I think — yes, I don’t think there is an issue where somebody couldn’t go visit a gay loved one in the hospital. I don’t think that’s right. They love each other. So, I think there should be some. I’m not for gay marriage, but I’m not for discriminating against people." - Megachurch Pastor Joel Osteen, speaking on Fox News Sunday.
SCOTLAND: Christian Group To Send Anti-Gay Fliers To Every Glasgow Home
Scotland For Marriage, an anti-gay group backed by the Catholic Church and other sects, plans to send anti-gay fliers to every home in Glasgow. The fliers call for a public referendum on same-sex marriage.
The Scottish government has said it "tends towards the view" that same-sex marriages should be introduced. It is currently considering the responses it received to a public consultation on the issue, and has said faith groups and their celebrants should not be obliged to solemnise the ceremonies. In January, political leaders signed a pledge to support a campaign to legalise gay marriage. Leaders of the Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green and Conservative parties signed up at an event at Holyrood which was marked with a specially-created "equal marriage" cake. Scotland for Marriage is gathering a petition calling for the current definition of marriage to be maintained.
Medical examiners in Los Angeles are investigating the possible poisoning death of one of their own officials who may have worked on the case of Andrew Breitbart, the conservative firebrand who died March 1, the same day Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced probable cause for forgery in President Obama’s birth certificate. Michael Cormier, a respected forensic technician for the Los Angeles County Coroner died under suspicious circumstances at his North Hollywood home April 20, the same day Breitbart’s cause of death was finally made public. “There are mysterious circumstances surrounding his death,” said Elizabeth Espinosa, a news reporter for KTLA-TV. “We’re told detectives are looking into the possibility that he was poisoned by arsenic.”
WND commenters are elated. Sample reaction: "Oh, it's just coincidence :/ Just like how 3 openly gay members of 0bama's church, Rev. Wright's church - Larry Bland, Nate Spencer, and Donald Young - all ended up unalive, all within 40 days time, right at the end of 2007. The first two were sh0t in the head, ex*cution-style."
This weekend NOM posted the above story to their blog and Facebook page: "Clarence and Mayme Vail just became Guinness World Record holders for the longest living married couple — 83 years and counting! So what's their secret?" Bolding is mine because Clarence and Mayme have both been dead for years. That's their secret! (Via JMG reader Robert)
Wingnuts Launch Campaign Against Dan Savage Over Comments On Christianity
Yesterday many of the most widely read anti-gay sites in the nation launched a campaign against Dan Savage over comments he made two weeks ago during a speech before the National High School Journalism Conference. After Savage, with his usual frankness, pointed out the hypocrisy with which hate groups cherry-pick anti-gay quotes from the Bible, some of the students got up and walked out on his presentation, prompting Savage to label them as "pansy-ass" for being unwilling to hear out his critique. Here is the bit that has anti-gay groups so furious.
If you watched the clip, you'll likely agree that Savage has said pretty much the same thing on national television. The audience certainly knew what what to expect. So it was not by coincidence, I believe, that some of those "offended" students got up and ran directly to Focus Of The Family, which ten days ago was the first to issue an "outraged" press release on this non-story. Note that their article just happened to come out on the very morning of their anti-Day Of Silence event.
Using profanity to deride the Bible—and then mocking the Christian students after they left the room—is obviously a form of bullying and name-calling. This illustrates perfectly what we’ve been saying all along: Too many times in the name of “tolerance,” Christian students find their faith being openly mocked and belittled in educational environments. Incidents like this one stand in stark contrast to the principles we’ve continually espoused on our Web sites, truetolerance.org and dayofdialogue.com, which call for a free exchange of ideas and respect for different viewpoints, including those that are faith-based and socially conservative.
Also not by coincidence, yesterday this two week old nothing burger was suddenly all over the anti-gay blogosphere even though the event's organizers told the Christian media that Savage delivered exactly the sort of presentation that they had expected him to.
Part of the hypocrisy of the "anti-bullying" movement is that the concept of bullying is never defined in a meaningful way. Evidently, bullying is one of those things that is defined by the "victim." Hence, we have the spectacle of the man who created the video "It Gets Better" can speak against the bullying of gay kids, but then turn around and bully kids with Christian beliefs - and get away with it. Mr. Savage proves himself unworthy of being any kind of leader in an anti-bullying crusade. But his rant reveals how such a movement can stifle free speech and make a bully out of an anti-bullying icon.
The Obama Administration has placed significant support behind the so-called It Gets Better Project. There’s only one problem: the organization is headed by one Dan Savage. But there’s much more to Dan Savage than just anti-religious bullying. He’s one of the biggest bullies on the planet. And he’s the point person the White House specifically chose – and fundraised for – in order to push their anti-bullying agenda. Now, it’s not as though the White House was ignorant of the fact that the It Gets Better Project is run by Savage. On the contrary – search the White House website for Savage’s name, and two It Gets Better links come up.
While much of his audience walked out on him, Savage continued the Christian-bashing by lamenting the fact that the Apostle Paul didn’t tell a Christian slave owner “not” to own slaves, just “how” to own them. While proclaiming that the Word of God is flawed on issues of slavery, and “got it wrong” on “the easiest moral question humanity has ever faced”, he assured his audience that the Bible is also 100 percent wrong on human sexuality and alluded to the retreating students as “pansy a–es.” As WND has previously reported, Dan Savage is widely known as a radical, homosexual activist, who created a obscene site that redefines Rick Santorum’s last name as the byproduct of anal sex.
And of course, the quislings at GOProud could not resist this opportunity to suckle the pendulous teats of their anti-gay masters.
Dan Savage’s outrageous anti-Christian tirade hurts – not helps – the fight for gay rights in this country,” said Jimmy LaSalvia, GOProud Executive Director. “There is nothing incompatible between being a Christian and believing that all people should be treated equally, and Dan Savage’s attacks on Christianity only fuel those on the extremist fringe who oppose gay rights.” “Dan Savage should apologize for his comments and should apologize to the high school students in attendance who he called ‘pansy-asses,’” continued LaSalvia. “It is ironic that someone whose claim to fame is fighting bullying would resort to bullying tactics in attacking high school students who were offended by his outrageous remarks.”
GOProud's press release was instantly picked up by Fox News. This morning Savage issued an apology for using the expression "pansy-ass" in his speech, but he stuck by his critique of Christianity.
I would like to apologize for describing that walk out as a pansy-assed move. I wasn't calling the handful of students who left pansies (2800+ students, most of them Christian, stayed and listened), just the walk-out itself. But that's a distinction without a difference—kinda like when religious conservatives tells their gay friends that they "love the sinner, hate the sin." They're often shocked when their gay friends get upset because, hey, they were making a distinction between the person (lovable!) and the person's actions (not so much!). But gay people feel insulted by "love the sinner, hate the sin" because it is insulting. Likewise, my use of "pansy-assed" was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong. And I apologize for saying it.
Today is the eighth blogiversary of this here website thingy. As is tradition for today, here is my very first post.
April 29th, 2004
I was born and raised in rural North Carolina.
My fondest childhood memory is of playing in the dense, acrid, poison fog that was belched out by the county mosquito control truck during its daily dusk-time trip down our dirt road.
The cry of "Smokey! Smokey!" would fly up and down Nine Foot Road once the first faint sound of the pest control truck's generator was detected in the distance. Trailer screen doors would slam open and kids would pour into the street for ten minutes of gleeful, giddy, mad dashing around in the thick white clouds of DDT. We would smash into each other with full force in the blinding swirls and just scream and laugh hysterically, pick ourselves up and start running again. Parents had not a whit of concern about their children playing directly behind the spewing pipes of a pest control truck. In fact, NOT being allowed to play in the poison fog was often held out as potential punishment for misbehavior.
I think this explains a lot about me.
I appreciate all of you being here for these last eight years. Help yourselves to some cupcakes and punch. Please don't let the cat out.
Slimy gelatinous not-chocolate muck Nutella has lost the class-action lawsuit filed against it for claiming it was a healthy food item. In fact, one serving's ingredients are "comparable to a Three Musketeers bar."
“Defendant’s claims regarding Nutella are also false and misleading because they omit that Nutella contains over 55 percent processed sugar, the consumption of which has been shown to cause type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems,” the suit said. Particularly popular in Europe, especially Italy, Nutella is a breakfast and snack staple. Creative home cooks have been known to use it as a substitute in recipes for chocolate-banana crepes or chocolate thumbprint cookies. Basketball star Kobe Bryant formerly served as the spread’s spokesman. It even has its own fan-started “World Nutella Day.” The chocolate topping is made with sugar, palm oil and hazelnuts. A few tablespoons of Nutella contain about 200 calories, 11 grams of fat (3.5 grams saturated) and 21 grams of sugar.
As part of the massive settlement, Ferraro USA has agreed to compensate American customers for up to the cost of five jars of Nutella ($20). The actual payout will depend on how many people apply.
Next month tens of thousands of Ultra Orthodox Jews will rally in Citi Field, the Queens home of the New York Mets. Their mission is to denounce the modern world, specifically the internet and its supporting devices. The following notice has been published in NYC's Jewish Press:
It is well known that in recent times that through the Internet many serious family-related problems have been created, and it all happens because of it, and something must be done so they won’t be hurt. And since this touches almost everyone, we must assemble together to protect and be protected, and we hope that through this gathering in search of ideas we will be helped from Heaven to save the many, and may it be that we will be successful in encouraging the public not to stumble over this obstacle, and the Lord will guide us in a truthful path. And note that sometimes the suspension of Torah is the very way it which it must be kept.
The event will cost an estimated $1.5M. The Mets are on the road that weekend.
"There's a passage that I love in Romans 1 - I don't love what the topic is - but it talks about homosexuality and it says that they will receive in their bodies the penalties of their behavior. And the Bible again, it's right every time, and studies keep proving that and that's why AIDS has been something they haven't discovered a cure for or a vaccine for, because it's the fastest self-mutating virus known to mankind. Every time they just about get a vaccine discovered for it, it transmutes into something new and they have to start over again. And that goes to what God says, hey you're going to bear in your body the consequences of this homosexual behavior." - David Barton, the most notorious liar in the Christian world. And THAT is saying something.
BRITAIN: Vatican Liaison Calls For Ecumenical Battle Against LGBT Rights
The Vatican's official liaison to Britain has called for all religions to put aside their differences in superstitions in order to unite in battle against the civil equality of gay people.
Addressing English and Welsh bishops at their plenary meeting in Leeds, Archbishop Mennini, warned them they faced a “lengthy and probably difficult campaign”. “I wonder if we shouldn’t ask for and look for more support among other Christian confessions and indeed, persons of other faiths,” he said. “It seems to me that, concerning the institution of marriage, and indeed the sanctity of human life, we have much in common with the position of the Jewish community, the Chief Rabbi and many of the more significant representatives of Islam.” Speaking in London yesterday the second most senior active Catholic cleric in England and Wales, Archbishop Peter Smith, of Southwark, said there had been no “formal” contact with Jewish groups to form a united front on the subject of marriage. But he said: “We will work with anyone who agrees with us that to redefine marriage is not a good thing for society and will lead to more confusion.” He criticised the Government’s plans as “dangerous” and lacking in the usual consultation processes required for major legislation.
Before being assigned to Britain, Mennini was the Vatican's representative in Russia, where, according to Wikipedia, he is credited with "dramatically improving" relations with the Russian Orthodox Church. Wanna bet Mennini has a hand in Russia's recent campaign of oppression?
IRELAND: Proposed Bill Will Command Priests To Report Confessed Pedophilia
Ireland is in an uproar over a proposed bill which would make it a crime for priests to withhold crimes of pedophilia revealed in the confession booth.
Irish priests have vowed to defy a new law forcing them to report details of sexual abuse revealed in the confessional box. Ireland’s Justice Minister Alan Shatter is to introduce new legislation which will force the clergy to reveal all details disclosed in confession. But priests have vowed to defy the law despite the threat of a 10-year jail sentence after the introduction of the mandatory reporting legislation. The 800 strong Association of Catholic Priests has even told the Irish Independent newspaper that its members will flout the Shatter law.
Dublin Bishop Raymond Fields: "The seal of the confessional is inviolable as far as I am concerned, and that's the end of the matter." The new penalty for any Irish citizen who withholds knowledge of child abuse, priest or not, would be up to ten years in prison.
RELATED: As you'd expect, America's loudest defender of accused priests, Bill Donohue, is ever so pissed about the proposed law.
At his Tennessee high school's annual Dress Like A Fictional Character Day, one kid showed up as Jesus. Not only was he not expelled, he's been awarded scholarship money from an atheists group.
Jeff Shott, a sophomore at Summit High School, was not disciplined for his action back in January, but Principal Charles Farmer did advise him that if the costume caused a distraction during the day he would have to remove it. Shott voluntarily removed his robes and sash, a costume that included a hammer and nail. But Shott's pluck was not overlooked by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the organization, located in Madison, Wis., said Shott exhibited "spunk and a light touch with his actions." "We wanted to encourage him, and we know the cost of higher education. This is just a small stipend toward that," Gaylor said. Shott is the first to receive the Paul Gaylor Memorial Student Activist scholarship, named for Annie Laurie Gaylor's father, who recently passed away, she said.
Kraftwerk's only American pop chart hit was 1975's dreamy and iconic Autobahn, which got to #25. They had more success on the dance chart, such as with Telephone Call, which rode the top for two weeks in 1987.
